Today’s Schedule (contd) Manners and Etiqette Corporate Attire Presentation Skills during meetings, conferences etc Workshop on Presentations

Building Self – Confidence Belief in yourself as a person Belief in your Skills & Abilities Self – Confidence is gained through self – regulation and a positive and achievement nurturing climate

Self-Confidence: The Belief Of People Who Succeed What is Self-Confidence? Self-confident people are those who judge themselves and their capability to succeed positively. Think Positive. If You're Not Self- Confident, What Are You? You are self-unsure if you are not sure whether or not you can deal with a tough situation.

Self-Confidence and Success: Evidence Research in academics, athletics, business, rehabilitation, relationships, and other areas of people's lives has consistently found that people with confidence exhibit: More effort. More persistence in the face of adversity. More moderately challenging choices of activities.

The Nonsuccess Syndrome: Learned Helplessness While success leads to self-confidence, lack of success leads to learned helplessness. Helplessness = “It’s all my fault!”, “I’m just stupid!”, “There is just not enough time!”, “I don’t want to try!” & “I can’t!”

Self-Confident People Think and Act Differently While our thoughts affect our confidence, our behaviors foster it. Nothing creates the belief that you can do something better than you doing it! Nike = “Just Do It!” Me = “Nothing succeeds like success!”

Changing Your Thinking Many of the people who live in the past or future fill their heads with negative thoughts. Positive thoughts breed self-confidence, the goal is to think positive thoughts.

The Strategy for Positive Thinking Keep Track Know when you are using this negative thinking. See if there is a pattern with certain people or events. Does your sister make you feel stupid? Think Positive Write a positive self-talk script to counteract those negative thoughts. Ex. “I do look good in my bikini.”

Four Techniques For Building Self-Confidence! You will not have success with the following BEHAVIORAL techniques if you do not begin with a positive attitude about building self- confidence. Research consistently suggest that these techniques increase confidence!

#1 Regulate Your Emotional Level Reduce the drive to avoid your goal. Get started! Block fear producer from awareness. You CAN and WILL... Use relaxation techniques. Make sure they are planned!

#2 Seek Affirmation Remember to use Positive Self-Talk Scripts. “I am excellent in planning.” “I can get along well with people.” “I am a trustworthy person.” “I have an attractive personality!”

#3 Pick the Right Models It is important to pick models to whom you are similar. They are the ones you can successfully imitate and expect to achieve the same results as they do. Ex. Choose friends who are excellent in their jobs. Ex. My friend Sushma…

#4 Just Do It!!! Remember to JUST DO IT CORRECTLY! Success breeds confidence, but failure breeds self-doubt.

Reasonable Risk & Self- Confidence Successful people choose tasks of moderate difficulty. Choosing tasks that are too easy will not build confidence to succeed at new things. Choosing tasks that are too difficult will likely result in failure, leading to self-doubt.

Bite Size Pieces & Self- Confidence Using a model to provide help is a great way to take “baby- steps” to increase difficulty while maintaining successful outcomes.

Bite Size Pieces & Self-Confidence Make a list of the things that you do like about yourself Do something nice for yourself Make a list of the things that you do well

Bite Size Pieces & Self-Confidence Remind yourself of the things that you value in yourself, keeping in mind those qualities you really appreciate Finally, another way to rebuild your self confidence is to try doing and risking things that you’ve never tried before

Exercise 1) Think of and describe two situations, on where you put in a lot of effort and one where you put in only a little. Describe, in two paragraphs, how, relative to your ability in the two cases, the results turned out. (3 pts)

Exercise An example is me planning the Annual vacation for my family vs my sister planned the trip. She did not make any reservations or plan any activities. A lot of time was spent by the family voting and trying to decide on the best places to go. A lot of money was wasted booking events at the last minute.

Exercise 2003, I planned the trip. Organized with daily schedules. Less wasted time trying to figure out what to do. Spent less money. Everyone was generally happier.
