DEBATE EDITORIAL Due: end of class 2/20

Step 1: Brainstorm  Individually, complete the Brainstorm Editorial worksheet  Find 4 controversial topics in your book  Come up with a debate question for each of them  Provide the arguments for and against each

Review Assignment Let’s look at the assignment. Directions:  With your partner, choose a Debate Question related to a controversial topic in your book.  Decide which stance each of you will take (YES/FOR or NO/AGAINST)  One person for each side of the argument. If you are a group of three, split 2:1; each person will write their OWN column; for example, you would have one YES column; one NO column; and another YES column – rebuttal!)  Each group member will write their own 250 words arguing his/her side Each group member will include one piece of evidence (quoted) from the book (include the author) in their argument and cite with page number EX: For example, Malcolm Gladwell states, “We live in a world that assumes that the quality of a decision is directly related to the time and effort that went into making it” (13).  As a pair, organize your content into an editorial piece (newspaper/magazine article) and include:  A title (title is your Debate Question)  Two powerful pieces of content one for YES and one for NO make them stand out (Bold, Bigger font) include which student wrote it  Two neatly drawn images (one for YES and one for NO)  Editorial should include bolded subtitles (of writer’s name) above their argument

Step 2: Collaborate  Meet your partner!  As a pair, choose one of your brainstormed topics  Pick sides  You must each pick a different side. Groups of 3 (only when necessary) should be split 2:1

Step 3: Make a Game Plan  Review the assignment as a pair to ensure understanding.  Fill out the Game Plan worksheet  Decide who is going to do what  Decide what you are going to accomplish during class time each day

Step 4: Start Working  Using your “Game Plan” sheet as a reference, work on your editorial project.  Your goal is to stick to your plan and get everything done that you committed to accomplishing each day.
