What is the Jimmy V Foundation? On March 4, 1996, Jim Valvano announced the creation of the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research. The foundation, from the start, was set up to allow try and find a cure to cancer. The foundation has been at the forefront of cancer research since its opening.

Who was Jim Valvano? Jim Valvano, more widely known as “Jimmy V,” was the coach of the North Carolina State Wolfpack for basketball from With the Wolfpack, Jim won his only national championship, with one of the most improbable runs in tournament history.

Who was Jim Valvano? Jimmy V was diagnosed with cancer in June of 1992, he fought the disease for over 4 years. Jim won the Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award in 1993, when he gave his world-renowned speech.

The Speech Upon winning the ESPY award, Jim inspired millions of people nation-wide as he gave his advice as a man dying from cancer. Most famous line from the speech is his saying “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.” This line is now the V Foundation’s slogan.

The Speech Jim ended his speech with the quote: “I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Cancer can take away all of my physical abilities, but it cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart, and it cannot touch my soul. And those three things are going to carry on forever.”

The Legacy of V Valvano was almost prophetic in his speech when he talked about research possibly saving his children’s lives. His daughter, Jamie, was diagnosed with breast cancer in Unlike Jim, Jamie was cured thanks in large part to money raised by her father’s foundation.

Jimmy V Week College basketball has an annual “Jimmy V Week,” featuring the “Coaches v. Cancer Tournament.” The goal of this week is to raise money for the V Foundation. Jimmy V Week raises on average 4 million dollars every year.
