Chipir A new neutron single event test facility at the UK’s ISIS Neutron and Muon Source

Our suite of neutron and muon instruments allows the properties of materials to be understood at the scale of atoms. We support an international community of around 3000 scientists studying subjects ranging from clean energy and the environment, pharmaceuticals and health care, through to nanotechnology, materials engineering and IT. Over the last 25 years, ISIS has become one of the UK’s major scientific achievements. It is the most productive research centre of its type in the world and has published over 9000 research papers since ISIS is owned and operated by the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council. ISIS is a world-leading materials research centre at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford in the United Kingdom

Chipir An instrument for rapid testing of effects of high energy neutrons The interaction of cosmic rays with the earth’s atmosphere generates showers of particles including high energy neutrons. Cosmic neutron radiation can disrupt the normal operation of electronic systems, particularly in aircraft and road vehicles with problems ranging from wiping a device’s memory to damaging the electronics. Chipir will be the first dedicated facility outside the USA to look at how silicon microchips respond to cosmic neutron radiation. The new neutron beam line at ISIS will dramatically speed up electronics testing with a measurement of just one hour being equivalent to exposing microchips to high-energy neutrons over hundreds of years of flying time in an aircraft. The instrument will be the world’s best facility for screening microchips with neutrons, leading to safer, more reliable electronic systems. Chipir is a new neutron single event test facility being built at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, in theUK. It will provide an atmospheric spectrum of neutrons up to an energy of 800MeV with a variable collimated beam and an large area beam. The bespoke design incorporates many feature to help users of the facility perform test measurements accurately and efficiently.

Atmospheric spectrum of neutrons extending up to 800MeV Variable collimated beam and large area beam Selectable thermal neutrons High flux Large experimental room EMC shielded room Well equiped user roon Automated sample positioning Easy-access shielded cable routes In-situ cabling The ChipIr instrument is currently in construction. You will be able to visit it during RADECS 2013 in Oxford, UK Putting engineers at the heart of the design Single Event Testing at ISIS will start at the end of 2013 – we welcome users from any sector and from around the world New European facility building on over 25 years of experience in designing and operating neutron facilities and instrumentation

Come and experience…. Strong transport links to UK, Europe and USA Easy and quick site access for people and equipment Dedicated User Office to assist you with your visit Technical support on site Open internet access With thousands of visitors per year the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory has on-site accommodation, restaurant and many other user facilities

The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is sited in the historic Oxfordshire countryside within easy reach of many of Britain's major attractions Come and visit….
