Systems in Non-living Things

What is a system? A system is made up of 2 or more parts; All the parts of a system work together to perform a function.

Example of A System The computer is a system. Why do you think it is a system? It is because the computer is made of more than 2 parts.

Example of A System Look at the computer. Can you name the parts of this system?

Example of A System Now, let’s look at a pencil. Is it a system? Yes! wood casing eraser Pencil lead Now, let’s look at a pencil. Is it a system? Yes! Can you name the parts of this system?

Missing Part If one part of a system is missing, the system cannot function properly. Let’s go back to the computer again…

What happens if the system unit is missing? Example of A System What happens if the system unit is missing? The computer will not be able to process information as the system unit is the ‘brain’ of the computer.

What happens if the keyboard is missing? Example of A System What happens if the keyboard is missing? We will not be able to input any information.

What happens if there is no monitor screen? Example of A System What happens if there is no monitor screen? We will not be to see any information generated by the system unit.

Let’s go back to the pencil again… wood casing eraser Pencil lead What happens if there is no pencil lead? What happens if there is no wood casing? What happens if the eraser is missing?

Now,what if you have a ruler? An eraser? Are they systems? No. Why do you say so? It is because they are made up of only one part, not two or more.

Look at your stapler Is it a system? Why do you say so? What happens if some of the parts of this stapler is missing?
