Akem Washington

Group # 9

Discovered by Georg Brandt at 1735 in Sweden. He had been trying to demonstrate that the blue color of glass was because of a new element, cobalt, rather than bismuth, an element often found in the same locations as cobalt.

Cobalt Difluoride Formula=CoCl 2 Cobalt Oxide Formula=Co0

Common uses Cobalt is known to improve rechargeable batteries and can be an important part of the battery systems of hybrid electric vehicles. Fighting Cancer Cobalt can treat some forms of cancer in the form of cobalt-60, a radioactive isotope of the element that produces gamma rays. Cobalt- 60 can also be used to sterilize medical supplies.

Appearance in Natural Form Hard lustrous gray metal

Where it is commonly found and if natural or man-made minerals cobaltite, erythrite, and smaltite Natural

2 physical Properties Melting Point °F Boiling Point-5301 °F

State at Room Temperature Solid

2 Chemical Properties Chemically reactive stable in air and not affected by water

Other Cobalt Facts The name cobalt comes from the German word kobalt, meaning evil spirit, the metal being so called by miners because it was poisonous. Specific Heat J/g mol): 0.456
