Proposed Task Management Meta-task Task Force Meeting /01/07 G W Lanyon

Motivation – when the first meeting you attend is #22 15 years and 6 tasks – have produced a great deal of understanding about what works within collaborative modelling groups. But has it been captured and made available to newcomers and other groups? At the RAUMA Workshop we had to make choices about what will make a successful start to Task 7 The aim is not to write a history of the task force but to identify the “success factors” and pitfalls and provide guidance for future tasks and other task forces. The plan would be to do something very "light" that captures (possibly with examples) the factors that create successful tasks. It definitely should not be too prescriptive - advantages/disadvantages for different choices rather than right/wrong.

Issues to address Choice of modelling tasks: –What makes a good task/subtask (e.g blind prediction, forward modelling vs inverse or calibration, process/parameter identification) How should models be evaluated –Choice of performance measures (advantages/ disadvantages) –Qualitative/soft measures and evaluation Requirements for data sets and ensuring traceability Identifying benefits from the modelling studies to the different participants

What is the deliverable? A short report (20 pages) Brief description of TF and the work its done (table of the 7 tasks with their aims) Task Force organisation: the role of the secretariat, chairman etc – how it works Task management: –Selection –Definition –Performance –Evaluation Performance measures Review –Finalisation Communication of results Lessons learned Benefits from Task Force

Where do we get the information? Questionnaires (review historic ones and maybe one new one) Interviews/discussions with participants at Task Force meetings and workshops: Modellers, delegates, reviewers – only volunteers! Input and evaluation from Chairman and Secretariat Input from other Stakeholders? Gather information and brainstorm at TF#23?

Options Why do something now? –Still have signifiant involvement from those involved with the Aspo focussed tasks –Discussions with EBS task force – what will make a good cooperative task –6 Modelling tasks completed 15 years of work with good continuity of people It’s only worth doing if those who have the experience are interested This is just one additional possible output from the Task Force – are there other outputs?
