A Taste of Knowledge Lunch and Learn Seminar: Project Management Complexities ©Systems Wisdom LLC 2015

Welcome and Overview  Welcome and introductions  Sponsors, instructors, and participants  Intentions of program Learn what is needed to deal with the challenges of project complexity. Provide guidance on why to make the right decisions in a complex project one much have the proper approaches to learning, knowledge of critical concepts, and knowledge of enabling IT.  Expectations of participants What do you hope to gain by attending?

Project Management by the Book vs. Reality

About Project Complexity  Good project managers often lose the battle to manage the challenging projects undertaken by companies today, even when they manage by the book.  (This is because) project managers are still trained to create order through predictability, but not to manage transitions from one state to another, where a new and more advantageous basis for understanding the future work arises. Complex projects call for management thinking that matches a project’s unpredictability. Amtoft and Vestergaard (2004)

What You Will Learn  Even experienced PMs can suddenly find they are dealing with complex issues - wicked problems that don’t respond to the usual remedies and that threaten their program and can ruin their careers.  You will learn:  How to recognize interactive complexity in programs and projects  Techniques for dealing with impacts of complex interactions on organizational functions, structure, processes and measurement and control  Leadership capacities and competencies necessary to effectively deal with complexity  The relationship of complexity to organizational learning and knowledge management, program and portfolio management, and program maturity modeling

Larry M.
