Vocabulary Revival Camp Meeting Georgia Baptist Convention University of Georgia Louisville, Georgia Second Great Awakening

The Great Awakening What was the Great Awakening? The First Great Awakening was a religious movement that occurred in Europe In response to the enlightenment era Reaffirmed the view that being truly religious meant trusting the heart rather than the head prized feeling more than thinking relyed on biblical revelation rather than human reason

The First Great Awakening reached the American Colonies and appeared among Presbyterians in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Spread throughout the middle coloies and up into the New England Colonies Inspired some to become missionaries to the southern portion of the area

The First Great Awakening left the south polarized along religious lines. – Some argued against the teachings that the emotions that followed the revivals led to disorder and discord.

The Second Great Awakening swept across America During this time, interest in religion in the United States increased, especially for Protestantism. Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, and the Anglican Church participated.

Methodists Tent Revivals- new form of religious meeting that developed during this time Revival- meeting meant to interest people in religion Methodists held camp meeting revivals Georgias first camp meeting was held in Hancock county around 1803 Camp meetings continued for several years

Baptists During this time,Baptists leaders wanted to unite all of the different Baptist groups in the state Georgia formed the Georgia Baptist Convention. – This brought together different types of Baptists – Eventually the Baptist Convention joined the Southern Baptist Convention

Anglican Church Anglican Church was an extension of the Church of England During this time, the Anglicans were the biggest religious group in the state. The Anglicans changed their name to Protestant Episcopal Church in 1789

Discussion Discuss with your neighbors how these revivals affected the Georgia. Keep in mind how Georgias reputation is today.

Education One of the first things the state of Georgia did following the Revolutionary War was to open a university. Abraham Baldwin wrote the plan for the school that is now known as the University of Georgia – He believed that education education was necessary for free government

UGA Baldwin believed that everyone should have a good education, not just the wealthy. During this time, other colleges were private and too expensive for the average person University of Georgia was the first college to open its doors to lower income people First Class was held Sept 1801

Louisville, Ga After the revolution, stse legislatures demanded that Georgias capital be moved further west than Savannah a commission, including William Few Jr. was given a job of finding the new capital The commission purchased 1000 acres near Ogeechee River. They named this land after Louis XVI the french king who helped them during the Revolution

1796- Georgia named Louisville the capital Shortly after, in 1807, Georgia was forced to move the capital once again. Why?
