What’s new Faculty: Dr. David Lin, Dr. Matthew Fendt CSI Colloquium Fall & Spring, more outside speakers Ph.D. proposal The big next thing. Going

Ph.D. proposal Focus area: Informatics (think ‘big data’) Bioinformatics, data mining, machine learning, databases, algorithms 5 core faculty in this area Working our way through the approval process Targets (10 years out): Graduating 5 Ph.D. students per year Increased publishing and research expenditures ($2.1M) 5 new faculty

National CSI Ph.D. Trends (Taulbee) CSI undergrad enrollment will increase 25%. 32% of CSI tenure-track faculty positions went unfilled (2013). 99.2% of all new CSI Ph.D.s find jobs. 55% in industry, 30% in academia. All 62 AAU universities (except Tulane) offer Ph.D. in CSI.

(NSF) Survey says… Graduate enrollment in the various science fields remained fairly flat from 2012 to 2013, except for computer sciences, which jumped by 8.8% and contributed to 1% growth of overall graduate enrollment in science from 2012.

Challenges of the Ph.D. Undergraduate enrollment limit to ~315 majors Recruiting Ph.D. students Faculty size and faculty-student ratio depends on faculty hiring Space should be better soon… Funding

Opportunities of the Ph.D. More ambitious research projects Due to longer tenure of Ph.D. students External collaboration Funding opportunities Most NIH / NSF funding goes to Ph.D.-granting programs Faculty hiring Only ~3% of new Ph.D.s go to faculty positions in non-Ph.D.- granting programs
