CARBOHYDRATES & FATS CARBOHYDRATES: Provides ENERGY for the muscles. Stored energy for long- term use. e.g. Pasta, Potatoes, Rice Or – Cakes, Sugar, Fruit FATS: Provides ENERGY, increases SIZE and WEIGHT. Short-term energy. Lead to high cholesterol e.g. Cheese, butter, chocolate.

PROTEINS & FIBRE PROTEINS: Growth of MUSCLE Growth of MUSCLE REPAIRS tissue REPAIRS tissue Essential to heal injuries. Essential to heal injuries. e.g. Meat, Fish, Eggs, Nuts FIBRE: Keeps the DIGESTIVE system functioning properly. Keeps the DIGESTIVE system functioning properly. Retains less waste. VITAMINS & MINERALS VITAMINS: General HEALTH of athletes. Used to help prevent various conditions. e.g. Vit C – fruit Helps prevent illness, and improve skin condition. WATER Allows blood to flow more easily round the body. Prevents DEHYDRATION, particularly important in endurance events or hot weather.

ENERGY Why do we need Energy? 1. To keep the body functioning (keep the BMR going) 2. To enable a minimum PAL at all times.
