Water Resources Water is essential to life on Earth. Humans can survive for more than a month with food, but can only last a few days without water.

Two Types of Water Fresh Water The water that people can drink Contains little salt Salt Water The water in oceans Contains higher concentrations of dissolved salts and minerals

Stranded on an island… Can you drink the ocean water? Why or why not? What happens to our cells when we drink salt water?

The Water Cycle Water is considered a renewable resource because it is circulated in the water cycle. The Water Cycle is the continuous movement of water between Earth and its atmosphere. Water’s states of matter: Solid, Liquid, and Gas

A Renewable Resource? If our water is polluted or made unusable at a rate faster than nature can replenish it, then it becomes nonrenewable.

Global Water Distribution Why is fresh water such a limited resource? 71% of the Earth is covered in water 97% is salt water What percent of Earth’s freshwater is in a form we can use?

Surface Water Surface water is fresh water on Earth’s land surface. Found in lakes, rivers, streams, and wetlands.

Terms River System- a flowing network of rivers and streams draining a river basin. Watershed – the area of land that is drained by a river.

What Is A Watershed? Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOrVotzBNto

Watersheds Pollution ANYWHERE in a watershed may end up polluting all of the water down stream.

Ground Water Ground water – water that is found beneath Earth’s surface in the spaces in sediment and rock formations. The water table is the area of rocks and soil saturated with water. The level of the water table depends on The amount of water in the ground The surface features The type of rock The amount of water withdrawn

Aquifers Aquifer – an underground formation that contains groundwater.

Aquifer Adventures https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3wpBI179Eg

Porosity and Permeability Porosity – the percentage of the total volume of a rock that has spaces. Permeability – the ability of rock or soil to allow water to flow through it. Impermeable: clay Permeable: limestone, sandstone Which one makes for a more efficient aquifer?

The Recharge Zone A recharge zone is an area on Earth’s surface from which water percolates down into an aquifer. RZ’s are very sensitive area because pollution in a recharge zone can enter the aquifer. The size of an aquifer’s recharge zone depends on the permeability of the of the surface above the water. Concrete – buildings, parking lots, etc. – are impermeable.

Wells A well is a hole that is dug or drilled to reach groundwater
