Presentation transcript:

12, 2916 – 5 th Avenue Calgary, Alberta, T2A 6K4, Canada Phone: + 1 (403) , Fax: + 1 (403) Website: CAWST is a Canadian non-profit organization focused on the principle that clean water changes lives. Safe water and basic sanitation are fundamentals necessary to empower the world’s poorest people and break the cycle of poverty. CAWST believes that the place to start is to teach people the skills they need to have safe water in their homes. CAWST transfers knowledge and skills to organizations and individuals in developing countries through education, training and consulting services. This ever expanding network can motivate individual households to take action to meet their own water and sanitation needs. One of CAWST’s core strategies is to make knowledge about water common knowledge. This is achieved, in part, by developing and freely distributing education materials with the intent of increasing its availability to those who need it most. Implementation Case Study: Deep Springs International (DSI)

Deep Springs International (DSI) Emergency: Earthquake HWTS Options: Gadyen Dlo (NaCl) and Aquatabs (NaDCC) Target Population: Communities in Leogane commune, Haiti Impact: more than 100,000 people reached with improved drinking water from January to May 2010

4 Introduction USA-based NGO operating in Haiti Mission: –Driven by the belief that long-term access to safe water can be achieved through locally run businesses that provide water treatment products at prices rural families can afford. –DSI seeks to improve life in developing countries by identifying and encouraging the use of affordable water purification systems, teaching the importance of proper household water treatment, and creating new business opportunities for local people

5 Background Gadyen Dlo brand was developed in 2002 (CDC and partner Misson of Love) Gadyen Dlo system consists of a safe water container, liquid chlorine, and user training Gadyen Dlo System (Credit: DSI)

6 Background Gadyen Dlo promotion in Leogane started in 2002 Before the earthquake: 1,500 households in Leogane were using Gadyen Dlo Distributed by 35 Community Health Promoters (CHWs) Source: haitifoundation.org (accessed Feb 2012)

7 Background On Jan 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit, affecting 3 million people compounded existing issues of poverty and very limited access to education, health services, water and sanitation Source: US Geological Survey

8 Background DSI responded by distributing Gadyen Dlo and Aquatabs with safe water storage containers By Feb 2010, DSI had reached 2,880 new families. By May 2010, they reached 15,200 families. Gadyen Dlo Distribution (Credit: Save the Children and DSI)

Public promotion of Gadyen Dlo (Credit: DSI) Creating Demand Chlorine is well accepted in Haiti Promotion campaign Community Health Workers (CHWs) – distribution network prior to the earthquake Targeted households without access to improved water sources 9

10 Successes –Built upon local knowledge and acceptance of chlorine for HWTS –Total coverage was achieved during the emergency in some communities Creating Demand Challenges –Targeting of recipient households was not as rigorous during emergency response Gadyen Dlo Signboard (Credit: DSI)

Supplying Products and Services Distribution in Léogane January – May 2010 Safe water container supply Fitted containers with lids & spigots Distribution of containers and chlorine within 1 week Ordered 15,000 buckets Assembling containers (Credit: DSI) 11

Supplying Products and Services Aquatabs – ordered within 3 days of event 67 mg tablets treat 20L of water Containers & tablets trucked to 18 distribution points CHWs picked up products at distribution points Aquatabs packaging (Credit: aquatabs.com) 12

Supplying Products and Services CHWs rented mules and carried 25 systems each trip Distribution to homes 2-3 weeks after the event –1 bucket & 50 tablets provided for free –Education on product use Provided additional tablets during follow-up visits Distributing containers (Credit: DSI) 13 May 2010 ended free distribution Promoted Gadyen Dlo at cost-recovery

14 Supplying Products and Services Distribution in Grand Goave Gadyen Dlo chlorine solution provided once for free Distribution continued at previous price CHWs sell chlorine refills CHWs receive a profit for each refill sold Gadyen Dlo Refills (Credit: unicef.org)

Successes Ability to meet immediate needs in affected areas Strong, existing relationship with supplier – factory jobs created during emergency Building on existing practices and community practices allows for a cost- effective and more sustained effect. (e.g. mules) Supplying Products and Services 15 Using Gadyen Dlo (Credit: unicef.org)

Lessons learned Need to make quick decisions with the information available Choosing Aquatabs allowed the organization to focus on supplying the product to more people rather than producing the product Supplying Products and Services 16 Producing Gadyen Dlo (Credit: DSI)

Building Human Capacity CHWs Trained by DSI staff –Participatory hygiene education –Product use –Chlorine testing –Monitoring forms CHW training on chlorine testing (Credit: DSI) new CHWs recruited and trained Households Participate in training to receive a safe water system Follow-up visits to encourage consistent and correct use

18 Monitoring and Improvement CHWs conduct follow- up visits to households and test for chlorine residual Each household visited once every 2 weeks CHW testing for chlorine residual (Credit: DSI) CHWs submit information to head CHW –Monitoring forms, contact information for new households, chlorine test results Field supervisors performed spot checks on CHWs – 1 spot check per CHW

Monitoring and Improvement Successes Over 80% of households who received containers had chlorine in their water at the time of unannounced visits Lessons learned Probably could have produced and distributed Gadyen Dlo to families in Léogane which could have increased brand awareness For cholera emergency, decided to stick with Gadyen Dlo 19

20 Program Financing Emergency response: Save the Children, private donors, Lanxess (US corporation) Estimated cost of 15 USD for safe storage container and 3-month supply of Aquatabs End users contribute during development programs –50 Gourd for 250mL bottle refill of Gadyen Dlo –10 Gourd is profit for CHW

21 Targeted households with contaminated water, such as those using unimproved sources Provided HWTS option that was familiar to population and high willingness to use Trained households well and ensured they had necessary supplies Conducted ongoing follow-up through CHWs – important for adoption in both emergency and non-emergency contexts Summary
