…enhances the well-being of the volunteer while providing a service to the individual or organization. SERVICE LEARNING

 Using the handout provided, answer questions #1-5  Share your response with a partner.  Let’s compile our ideas as a class… THINK – PAIR - SHARE

1. WHAT IS A VOLUNTEER?

2. WHY DO PEOPLE VOLUNTEER?

3. WHAT ORGANIZATIONS ARE YOU AWARE OF IN OR AROUND OUR COMMUNITY THAT BENEFIT FROM VOLUNTEERS?

4. HOW DOES VOLUNTEERING IMPACT YOUR OVERALL WELL-BEING?

5. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT YOUNG PEOPLE VOLUNTEER IN THEIR COMMUNITY?

 Brainstorm situations or programs that could benefit from having you as a volunteer. (You may want to use the phonebook as a resource!)  From the list you compiled, determine which agencies you would like to contact to potentially volunteer at over the semester. INVESTIGATE

 Volunteering begins Feb.1 st - June 4 th.  Any volunteer work completed before that date was done out of the goodness of your heart. It will not count towards your 12 hours you must complete this semester.  Working for organizations that profit (but not getting paid), is not Service Learning. Example: cleaning the office at Enbridge, but not receiving payment.  Helping out your friends or family members. This is an act of kindness and will not count towards volunteer hours. Example: shoveling the driveway of the elderly man down the street.  If you are unsure if an organization will qualify as Service Learning, please make arrangements with your teacher before you begin volunteering. WHAT SERVICE LEARNING IS NOT…

 Send a letter home to parents about how you will be involved in service learning over the semester. Must have your parent/guardian sign letter and return to your teacher by  Make contacts to potential organizations you may volunteer at. This is done on your own time and you should begin contacting agencies as soon as possible.  From the contacts you have made, choose a place(s) to volunteer at over the semester. You may volunteer with more than one organization. At this point you should have set up dates and times to volunteer.  Begin your Service Learning! TAKE ACTION

 You must complete a Personal Reflection of Service Learning. (Volunteer Form attached)  You must have an Agency Evaluation by Supervisor completed. (Volunteer Form attached)  Upon completion of service learning, provide a Thank You note to the agency who took you on as a volunteer. UPON COMPLETION OF SERVICE LEARNING…

 Identify volunteering opportunities that interest you.  Letter home to parents/guardians about service learning. Signed by parents/guardians: Due on Oct 14, 2011  Make contacts to potential organizations you may volunteer at. (ASAP)  Choose a place(s) to volunteer at over the semester.  Establish times/dates you are available (12 hours minimum).  Service Learning outline due Jan.9, 2012  Personal Reflection of Service Learning (Volunteer Form) Due Jan.9, 2012  Agency Evaluation by Supervisor (Volunteer Form) Due Jan.9, 2012  Thank You Note to Agency. (at completion of volunteer service) TO DO…
