Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy P4 student perspective Jina Park The Ohio State University PharmD Candidate 2014
Background Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS) Economics minor Worked at Kroger Pharmacy during undergrad Did not want to do retail or hospital… what’s left for me? Managed care Industry PharmD/MBA
Why did I choose Managed Care? Non-traditional pharmacy practice My interest in Economics/ Business Undergrad: Economics minor PharmD: marketing, operational management Experience at retail and other clinical settings taught me: Best clinical practices don’t always mean the most cost-effective therapy How do we balance the best clinical practice and the cost? If health plans do not cover certain drugs, patients will not be able to take the medications Inefficient US health care system Decisions that impact large population not individuals Focus on big picture
What is Managed Care? Where can I work? Based on clinical and economical data Make decisions on formulary management Cost control techniques -> prior authorization, quantity limit Think of pseudoephedrine As a managed care pharmacist… you can work at: Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) – Express Scripts, Caremark, OptumRx Health Plans – Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Health Pharmaceutical Companies in Health Outcomes, Medical Affairs, Marketing Consulting – Burchfield group, Excenda Government – Value-based care, comparative effectiveness research (CER) Hospital – Formulary management
