2 15 TOEIC Test: Lesson 3 C. Questions about Problems and Advice Short Conversations 1 st Woman: Why did you return the sweater your mother gave you? 2 nd Woman: It was a little too big for me. 1 st Woman : Too bad. It was such a nice color. Q: What was the problem with the sweater? ⓐ It was much too small. ⓑ It was the wrong color. ⓒ It was old and torn. It was slightly too large. The best answer is (D). The second woman says that the sweater was “a little too big” for her. This means that it was slightly too large. Choice (A) is incorrect because the sweater was too big, not too small. (This is tricky because the woman says “a little bit,” but she means that the sweater was only slightly too small, not much to small. Choice (B) is not correct. The first woman says that the sweater was “a nice color,” not the wrong color. There is no information to support choice (C). However, because the second woman just returned it, it was probably new, not old.

2 15 TOEIC Test: Lesson 3 Short Conversations Problem questions can be asked in several ways: What is the man’s/woman’s problem? What problem does the man/woman have? What is the problem here? What is wrong with …?

2 15 TOEIC Test: Lesson 3 C. Questions about Problems and Advice Short Conversations Q: What does the woman suggest that the man do? ⓐ Stop selling running shoes. ⓑ Lower the price for the shoes. ⓒ Buy more running shoes. ⓓ Give the shoes away for free.

2 15 TOEIC Test: Lesson 3 C. Questions about Problems and Advice Short Conversations Woman: You haven’t sold many of those running shoes this year. Man: That’s true. Last year I couldn’t keep them in stock, but now I can’t give them away. Woman: Those shoes aren’t as popular as they once were. You can’t charge as much for them as you did last year. Q: What does the woman suggest that the man do? ⓐ Stop selling running shoes. ⓑ Lower the price for the shoes. ⓒ Buy more running shoes. ⓓ Give the shoes away for free.

Q: What does the woman suggest that the man do? ⓐ Give the shoes away for free. Lower the price for the shoes. ⓒ Buy more running shoes. ⓓ Give the shoes away for free. The woman tells the man that he can’t charge as much for the running shoes this year as he did last year. Therefore, (B) is the best answer. Choice (A) is not correct. The woman does not tell the man to stop selling that type of shoe. She simply tells his that he can’t sell them at last year’s prices. Choice (C) is not the right answer. The woman does not tell him to buy more shoes. Choice (D) is also incorrect. The man says he “can’t give (the shoes) away. This means he can’t sell them. However, the woman does not tell the man to give the shoes away; she suggests that he sell them for a lower price.

2 15 TOEIC Test: Lesson 3 Short Conversations There are several ways that advice questions can be asked: What does the man/woman suggest? What does the man think the woman should do? What does the woman tell the man to do? What advice does the man give the woman?
