The Internet

The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that serve billions of users worldwide. It is believed that currently 2.1 billion people or 30% of the world’s population use the internet. The Internet Internet is a short form of the technical term internetwork,the result of interconnecting computer networks with special gateways or routers. The Internet is also often referred to as the Net. The terms Internet and World Wide Web are often used in everyday speech without much distinction. However, the Internet and the World Wide Web are not one and the same.

The Internet The hardware and software infrastructure of the Internet establishes a global communications system between computers. The Web is one of the services communicated via the Internet. It is a collection of interconnected documents and other resources, linked by hyperlinks and uniform resource locators or URLs.

The Internet The Internet began in the early 1960’s with computer to computer communication. It would be first used by the U.S. government and the military for secure communication. It would not be until the 1990’s that it would become widely available to the civilian population as Internet Service Providers or ISP’s would commercialize the Internet. Since its creation it is estimated the internet has grown at a rate of 100% or more a year.

The Internet is an important communications service available on the Internet. The concept of sending electronic text messages between parties in a way similar to mailing letters or memos but is much faster and more efficient. Pictures, documents and other files are sent as attachments.

The Internet Internet telephone is another common communications service made possible by the creation of the Internet. VoIP stands for Voice-over-Internet Protocol, referring to the protocol that underlies all Internet communication. The idea began in the early 1990s with walkie-talkie-like voice applications for personal computers. In recent years many VoIP systems have become as easy to use and as convenient as a normal telephone.

The Internet The benefit of VoIp is as the Internet carries the voice traffic, VoIP can be free or cost much less than a traditional telephone call, especially over long distances and especially for those with always-on Internet connections such as cable or ADSL. Simple, inexpensive VoIP network adapters are available that eliminate the need for a personal computer.

The Internet File sharing is an example of transferring large amounts of data across the Internet. A computer file can be ed to customers, colleagues and friends as an attachment. It can be uploaded to a website or FTP server for easy download by others. It can be put into a "shared location" or onto a file server for instant use by colleagues.

The Internet Streaming media is the real-time delivery of digital media for the immediate consumption or enjoyment by end users. Many radio and television broadcasters provide Internet feeds of their live audio and video productions. Social Networking A social networking service is an online service, program, or site that focuses on bringing people together who share the same interests or activities. A social network service consists of a representation of each user (often a profile), his/her social links, and a variety of additional services. Most social network services are web-based and provide means for users to interact over the Internet, such as and instant messaging

Social Networking Social networking sites allow users to share ideas, activities, events, and interests within their individual networks. It is also used in today's modern times to meet new people and form relationships such as dating Web-based social networking services make it possible to connect people who share interests and activities across political, economic, and geographic borders.

Social Networking With the increase in popularity of social media there has become an increase in the threats it poses. Such things as: Data Mining- the gathering of personal information businesses are able to advertise to a person’s specific wants or need. Cyber-bullying- Because there are not limitations on what people can post online things that may not be said in person are broadcast online. Privacy- People post so much information online that what use to be private lives are increasingly becoming public and can effect things such as home life, jobs, education, and even legal issues.

Social Networking The social networking revolution has led not only to the relationships people form with one another but also how they organize events. In the political world Facebook, and Twitter were largely used in the overthrow of the Egyptian government in 2011 and also in Libya and it is ongoing in Syria. The availability of instant communication allowed for massive rally’s and protests to be organized over night.

Online Shopping Online shopping is a form of electronic commerce whereby consumers directly buy goods or services from a seller over the Internet without a middle man. An online shop, eshop, e-store, Internet shop, webshop, webstore, online store, or virtual store evokes the physical sensation of buying products or services at a shopping centre.

Online Shopping In 1994 advances took place in online shopping, such as online banking and the opening of an online pizza shop by Pizza Hut. During that same year, Netscape, one of the first internet browsers, introduced SSL encryption of data transferred online, which has become essential for secure online shopping. Also in 1994 the German company Intershop introduced its first online shopping system. In 1995 Amazon launched its online shopping site, and in 1996 eBay appeared.

Online Shopping Shoppers now can shop at just about any retailer online. Goods are either delivered, downloaded, or can be picked up at a local outlet when convenient. There are several advantages of online shopping which include, selection, and the ability to check multiple prices at the same time.

Online Shopping There have been several shortcomings of online shopping such as fraud, and identity theft. Also the consumer cannot physically touch the product to see if it suits so returns can be troublesome at times.

Online Gaming An online game is a game played over some form of computer network. This almost always means the Internet or equivalent technology, but games have always used whatever technology was current: modems before the Internet, and hard wired terminals before modems.

Online Gaming The expansion of online gaming has reflected the overall expansion of computer networks from small local networks to the Internet and the growth of Internet access itself. Online games can range from simple text based games to games incorporating complex graphics and virtual worlds populated by many players simultaneously.

Online Gaming Many online games have associated online communities, making online games a form of social activity beyond single player games.

Online Gaming Doom popularized the concept of deathmatch, where multiple players battle each other head-to-head, as a new form of online game. Since Doom, many first-person shooter games contain online components to allow deathmatch or arena style play. First person shooter games are becoming more and more widespread around the world with the increased popularity of games such as Modern Warfare, Halo, and Battlefield.

Online Gaming MMORPG or Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game is becoming a popular pass time for a great number of people. Games like World of Warcraft, and Diablo allow players to go online and create an online persona or “avatar” and explore and interact with others in massive fantasy worlds. It allows players to sometimes “escape” from reality and create a persona of someone that they might like to be..
