What’s the buzz in education?? 3 Literacy: Reading Skills Reader’s Workshop –Emphasizes the interaction between readers and text (Students are hands-on with leveled text) –Students will work on their differentiated levels every day through the use of small groups. Phonics –Students will work on letter sounds through segmentation, blending, syllables, and fluency. Fiction and Nonfiction Reading Students will spend equal time this year reading fiction and non-fiction leveled text. They will be held accountable for the content of what they are reading.

Math Geometry Students will be able to reason with shapes and their attributes. They will compose 2-dimensional shapes and show 2 and 4 equal parts. Free powerpoint template: 4 Addition and Subtraction Students will be able to add and subtract within 20. They will solve word problems and use mathematical verbage to share their answers. Measurement and Data Students will be able to order three objects by length. They will interpret data with up to three categories. Place Value Students will work with numbers in the ones and tens place. Find 10 more or 10 less up to 120 and explain their reasoning.

Words Their Way · Spelling program based on developmental level of each speller · Students take a beginning assessment to determine developmental level · Placed into groups of other students on the same level · Students sort picture/word cards to notice spelling patterns · Sorting occurs 4-5 times a week · All spelling sorts are kept at school Free powerpoint template: 6

* All classrooms are using the same "clip-up" behavior chart. * The student's have the ability to 'move up' the chart as recognition for good behavior. * If a student is making poor choices, their clip will be moved down. Appropriate consequences will be given accordingly. * Your child will record their behavior DAILY. Please be sure to praise your child for positive behavior and discuss any negative behavior that might have occurred during the day. * Additional rewards and incentives occur in each First Grade Classroom. Grading Policy Students will be graded by formal and informal assessments. Teachers will also use classroom observation to assess student progress.
