The Maidu California Native American Tribe By Serenity Carol Dorsey

The Maidu The Maidu is a California Native American tribe. The Maidu lived in the hills and mountains. They also lived in Sacramento valley and in Sierra Nevada mountains . They lived in the vallies, forests, meadows, and near rivers lakes and streams. It was not too hot and not too cold but mild temperatures. I will tell you about the Maidu homes, food, celebrations and ceremonies, and other interesting things about them.

Maidu Homes Have you heard about the Maidu homes? The Maidu homes were built out of bark. They harvested large slabs of red wood or cedar bark. Then they covered the door with animal fur. The Maidu first dug a hole in the ground. Then they built a wooden frame over the hole. They also had community houses.

Maidu Food Have you heard about the Maidu's food ? The Maidu hunted food using bows, arrows, spears, and knives. The Maidu caught fish using hooks from carved bone. Then the Maidu hunted deer, elk , squirrels, and rabbits they used basket to catch fish too . Then they used long sticks to knock out hazelnut's and buckeyes from trees .

Maidu jobs Do you know that the Maidu women and men worked ? The Maidu men hunted and fished and Maidu women gathered food and cooked , meals. The men also made tools such as axes , and bows. They also hunted fish. They made fishing nets and fishing traps. Women made clothing and wove basket. Men and women took care of the children.

Maidu Clothing Do you Know what the Maidu wore? The Maidu women wore basket hats woven with geometric design . During ceremonies they wore bones, shells, feathers, and wood jewelry. In the summer, the Maidu wore few pieces of clothing.

Maidu Celebration/ Ceremonies Do you know what they celebrated and what they did during ceremonies? When a family member died, the Maidu burned all the persons possessions to help them feel better. The Maidu painted their bodies with paint they made from white c lay , red stone, or charcoal. They tattooed there upper bodies. They also danced and sang during some ceremonies.

Interesting Facts What else is there to know about the Maidu? They used sharp bird or fish bones and made designs on their bodies by poking holes in there skin and rubbing paint in the holes. Maidu children got their names between the ages of 2 or 3 years old and were named by their personality. Maidu means person in their language.

Maidu The Maidu was an interesting and unique California Native American tribe. I hope their numbers rises up and that they have good memories.
