FareShare Fighting Hunger, Tackling Food Waste

Food waste in the UK Food redistributed by FareShare Food that has potential for consumption & redistribution i.e. “surplus” Food wasted yearly by the UK food industry 5,500 tonnes 300,000 to 400,000 tonnes 3,900,000 tonnes FareShare redistributes 1.5 % of surplus food available annually

Where do we get the food? Retailers Growers Manufacturers

Wrong label or barcode Why is the food surplus? Too many grown/ ordered/delivered Too big, too small, too strange Nearly out of date

Who gets the food? 33% We redistribute to centres that support vulnerable people Hostels * Women’s Refuges * Breakfast clubs * Drug rehabilitation * Community cafes * Soup kitchens * Older people’s luncheon clubs

Food types redistributed 2014

Why work together? Supplement supplies for breakfast and after school clubs Run activities at a lesser cost Membership fees as low as £16 per week Our members save an average of £13,000 a year

How can we make it work? How do we distribute the food to each site?  Opportunities for collaboration/pooling of resources? Managing with variable food types  Balance with other suppliers
