STRATEGIES FOR SUSTAINABLE UNIVERSITIES Corporate Social Responsibility 2007 Summit State Library of NSW, Sydney 30 October – 1 November 2007 Professor Dean Forbes Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) Flinders University

On Sustainability According to the The Limits to Growth (1972) the current rates of growth would last about 100 years before the “limits” were reached. However, it would be possible to fashion ‘a condition of ecological and economic stability that is stable far into the future’ Brundtland Report definition: “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development “the goal…is to integrate the principles, values, and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of education and learning”

Universities St Petersburg State University Established by Peter the Great in Now ranked the second university in Russia Demonstrated its sustainability by the ultimate measure of sustainability. Survival through turbulent periods of history, including the Siege of Leningrad Sustainability for a 21 st century university is somewhat different Grow me the money Sustaining the commercial business Environmental sustainability

Hybridity and Commercial Risk Modern Australian universities are hybrids. University revenue of $13.9billion in 2005 Government funding is around 40% of total revenue, or 56% if HECs income is included as government funding Universities response has been to focus on building and maintaining the links with the communities that support them Community engagement is defined as: “The generation, use, application, and exploitation of knowledge and other university capabilities outside academic environments” (Molas-Gallart, Salter, Patel, Scott and Duran 2002) AUCEA: Australian Universities Community Engagement Alliance Talloires Declaration on the Civic Roles and Social Responsibilities of Higher Education

Case Study: International Education Universities derived $2.14 billion in international student fees in 2005, 15% of total sector revenue. In 2006 international education earned export income of $10.7billion. Education is Australia’s fourth largest export industry International students at Flinders University account for 20% of our students and 10.4% of our total revenue. Sustainability initiatives include: Protecting the brand Diversifying markets Addressing the on-campus needs of international students, and building the international alumni network Building links between international students and the community Education Adelaide strategy for fostering and improving the links between international students and the residents of Adelaide Nationally the Study in Australia brand reinforces the recognition of Australia as a quality education destination

Environmentally Responsible Practice Universities have a significant environmental footprint. They employ staff who research and teach about sustainability. And exhort others to adopt sustainable practices. There is moral imperative for universities to engage in environmentally sustainable practices A Google search of ‘sustainable universities’ identified 1,290,000 items The UK student group People and Planet, produced The Green League 2007, ranking British universities according to their environmental friendliness Initiatives in Australia include the University of Ballarat’s 2006 Sustainability Report

Case Study: Flinders University Strategic goal to ‘engage in environmentally responsible practices’, and ‘improve the environmental management of the University and work towards an environmentally sustainable campus’ A 20 year land management plan Green Transport Office Recycling The progressive installation of energy efficient lighting The purchase of green electricity More effective water usage

Case Study: Flinders University Comprehensive audit of the environmental footprint of the University The analysis of activities on campus that have a significant environmental impact An analysis of the supply chain An examination of other activities contributing to the environmental footprint Expertise associated with the University will be the primary source for the study Environmental strategy and Sustainability report in 2008 Support for the environmental needs of local businesses

Summing Up The focus has been on two sustainability issues: commercially significant international students, and the environment of university campuses. The challenges ahead: Sustaining an interest in sustainability Managing the regulatory environment Integrating sustainability principles into core strategies
