Run Chart

Page 174 in Tool book What is it? - A line graph- data plotted over time - A means of looking at the systems behavior over time - A tool used by an improvement team when gathering baseline data at the beginning of a project and again after the improvement theory has been tried

Run Chart How is it made? 1. Complete the header information. 2. Record the data. 3. Determine the scaling for the chart. 4. Plot the values on the chart. 5. Interpret the chart. Lets look at a run chart example (p. 175)

Run Chart Example (173 Tool Book) Step 2- Record The Data 9/189/219/2610/210/710/1010/13 10/1410/1710/1910/2010/2110/2210/2410/26 10/2810/ Step 3- Determine Scaling For Chart Smallest Number = 15 Largest Number = 29

Step 4- Plot Values On The Chart 9/ 18 9/ 21 9/ /2 10 /7 10/ 10 10/ 13 10/ 14 10/ 17 10/ 19 10/ 20 10/ 21 10/ 22 10/ 24 10/ 26 10/ 28 10/

Step 5- Interpret The Chart

In-Process Measure Example

Estimation Check Sheet Weekly Class Errors Hour 1 - Mr. Albert Strategy Total 1-6 Week12-Sep19-Sep29-Sep3-Oct10-Oct17-Oct Addition Subtraction Multiplication Division Application students Total Errors Number of Students 28

Ways to use the Run Chart How many and what kind of injuries happened on the playground? How did students score on weekly spelling tests? How many new words were used in a piece of writing? How many library books were checked out during a specific period of time? How many hot lunches were served each day? How many errors were made on a specific type of test?

Things to Remember about the Run Chart Gather as much data as possible before creating the chart. This will help you decide what numbers to use on vertical side of the chart. Try collecting data on check sheets first. This makes transferring the data easier. Be sure you have enough data to analyze. Run charts show data collected in time order.

Your Thoughts? How could you use the run chart in your classroom? What data could you collect? How could you use the data to increase student achievement?

Try it out!
