Developing Mathematical Creativity

Creative mathematicians… ask good questions link apparently disparate ideas notice patterns or structures make conjectures find new ways to apply familiar techniques find common themes find new ways to visualise abstractions find illustrative examples or analogies are not afraid to take risks

Resources We will create online resources designed to help young people (aged 7-16) develop their mathematical creativity, together with supporting material.

Inspiration There will be public lectures, videos and other material to show the importance of creativity in mathematics and inspire young people to be mathematically creative

What it’s not… Not about the maths within creative subjects, rather the creativity inherent within the discipline of mathematics

Preliminary ideas Environments for creativity – contexts where children can explore and come up with interesting mathematical ideas Scaffolding – providing children with models of what it means to be mathematically creative
