WHAT IS IT? Has recognized that people with diabetes should eat in a way that helps them reach their blood glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, and weight goals.

WHAT FOODS CAN/CAN’T BE EATEN? For most people who have diabetes a healthy diet consists of, 40% too 60% of calories from carbohydrates, 20% from protein, and 30% or less from fats, also should be low in cholesterol, salt, and sugar. To Avoid:Recommended Foods: Saturated Fats: Hot dogs & Beef. Healthy Carbohydrates: Fruits & Vegetables. Trans fat: Processed snacks & baked goods. Fiber-rich Foods: Whole grains, beans, and peas. Cholesterol: Shell fish, liver, & other organ meats. Heart Healthy Fish: Salmon & Tuna Sodium: Aim for less than 2,300 mg of sodium a day. Good Fats: Walnuts, Olives, & Canola's.

SAMPLE MENU: Breakfast:Whole wheat pancakes, or waffles. One piece of fruit, or ¾ cup of berries. 6 ounces of non-fat yogurt. Lunch:Cheese & Veggie pita, medium apple with two tbsp. of almond butter. Dinner:Beef stroganoff; one half cup carrots, and a side salad with spinach, tomato, bell peppers, olive oil, and vinegar. Snacks:Two unsalted rice cakes topped with one ounce of light spreadable cheese and one orange.

WHY PEOPLE ARE PUT ON THE ADA DIET: Helps control blood sugar level, and manage your weight which keeps you in a safe range.

FUN FACTS!! 1)If you have diabetes your body cannot make or properly use insulin. 2)About 1/3 of all people with diabetes do not know they have the disease. 3)Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in work age adults. 4)Type 2 diabetes often doesn’t have any symptoms. 5)Diabetes cost $174 billion dollars annually including $116 billion dollars in direct medical expenses.
