Summary of KO meeting With some subsequent developments

DIAMET field campaign September 2011, based at Cranfield 24 November - 15 December 2011, based at Exeter, joint with Met Office July-August 2012 (dates not finalised), Cranfield Arrangements for the 2011 campaign will be the main topic of this meeting.

DIAMET features of interest Thin strips of mid-level PV Along-front structures Sting jets Slantwise convection WCBs and embedded bands – pseudo-Lagrangian approach Tropopause folds Mesoscale cyclones Air-sea fluxes Along-front and across-front correlation (for DA) Microphysics measurements within radar coverage (Sue B)

Schematic flight plan Doug Parker

Mission planning – key roles Scientific coordinator Scientific secretary Lead Mission scientist Forecasting / Nowcasting team IOPs selected at morning briefings, chaired by Scientific Coordinator. Lead Mission Scientist works on detailed flight plans for the following day, choosing between IOP options, and aborting if necessary. Lead Mission Scientist will be assisted by The additional Mission Scientists (the team) scheduled to fly on the next IOP; PIs of instruments involved in the IOP in question; Other PIs with a direct scientific interest in the IOP; Scientist forecasters. Determined by rota (Keith)

Decision-making cycle Day J-2 - identification of possible IOPs, based on available forecast products, aircraft and instrument status/availability (on aircraft and ground based) Day J-1 - use of forecasts for identification of realistic IOP possibilities. Submission of a set of provisional flight plans (by 1200L) including – choice of region of operation (for NOTAMS declaration & to inform ground-based sites) – expected take-off time – may also include a contingency option B Day J0 - detailed flight plans finalised 4 hours before take-off (T-4), and submitted at least 2 hours before take-off (T-2) (?), possible re- evaluation of take-off time (T) as T approaches.

Meeting Cycle, day J ??? Deadline for receipt of status reports from all platforms and isolated sites 0930 – 1000 Daily briefing (Conference call or Operational Centre) i. Short review of IOP on previous days – scientific coordinator ii. Presentation of the forecast for the coming 48 hours and outlook iii. Presentation of special products relevant to IOPs (PIs) Decision on range of options for IOPs on Day J0, and for indications of likely operations for Days J1, J2 and J3 Lead Mission Scientist / team and other roles will be confirmed – 1200 Mission Scientists prepare J0 sortie Detailed sortie brief submission to DFL by 1200L (Operational Centre) On detachment: 1600 – 1700 Open Science meeting / flight debrief led by the Science Coordinator. i. Review of Day J0 IOP (on IOP days - including weather and data quicklooks) ii. Review of IOP plans for Day J1 and Day J2.

Weather radar 1 km2 km 5 km resolution Dopplerised Can we get French and Irish radar data for flight planning? Has this picture changed?

JCMM (Met O) contribution For campaign: 1min AWS data, 15 min wind profiler data and 2 s radiosonde data, with documentation and help to read the files Provision of operational high resolution (UKV or UK4) convective scale forecasts to enable flight planning High resolution convective scale DA for selected case studies for analysis UKV and Southern UK high-resolution DA MOGREPS-R ETKF operational, SUK cases only

Met Office (OBR) contribution 20 aircraft flight hours 40 extra dropsondes (possibly more) Co-funding of Exeter detachment - they want to continue microphysics work for Constrain during the DIAMET period The AIMMS probe (heated turbulence probe) should have been installed April ARIES for sea surface temperature measurements? Not confirmed
