Jim Berglund This Part covers opening bids above the 1NT level, and typical response sequences

Jim Berglund The purpose of this system is three-fold: to improve the odds in right-siding the contract (having the weaker hand exposed) to add more granularity to bidding – wherever possible, giving a precise, unique purpose to each and every bid to define strong suits and identify slam prospects quickly and at lower levels.

The 2 ♣ Opener and 2  Positive Response OpenerResponder RebidderAdvancer 2♣2♣ 22+ or 9+ Tricks (void,xx,Axx, AKQxxxxx, or better – see NAMYATS and 3-level transfers) 2 ♦ - Waiting - shows at least a King 2 ♠ / ♥ - Game Force - Bid your first feature or Game with a typical minimum 3 ♥ / ♠ - no interest in game; may be bid with a void in the suit 2NT HCP; Game Force; Systems on 3 ♣ / ♦ - at least a 5-card suit; invitational 3 ♥ / ♠ or the other minor - 4+ card suit or a feature with support 3NT - 2+ controls (A or K) 4 ♣ / ♦ - no interest in game 4 ♥ / ♠ - 6+ card suit with values, minimal outside values 5 ♣ / ♦ - No Aces; enough for game 3 ♥ / ♠ - at least a 6-card suit; forcing 3NT HCP; Balanced - Systems On 4 ♣ / ♦ - Game Force - Bid your first feature or Game with no Ace and a minimum 4 ♥ / ♠ - Less than 21 HCP, 9 tricks, no voids - add Aces to bid on 5 ♣ / ♦ - Less than 21 HCP, 10 tricks, no voids - add Aces to bid on

2 ♣ Openers and the Negative 2 ♥ Response OpenerResponderRebidderAdvancer 2♣2♣ 2 ♥ - no aces or kings 2 ♠ - at least a 5-card suit; invitational 3 ♠ - no interest in game 2NT HCP; Invitational; Systems on 3 ♣ / ♦ / ♥ - at least a 5-card suit; invitational 3 ♥ / ♠ or the other minor - 5+ card suit 3NT - any 5+ HCP 4 ♣ / ♦ - no interest in game 4 ♥ / ♠ - 6+ card suit 5 ♣ / ♦ - No Aces; enough for game 3 ♠ - Game Force 3NT HCP; Balanced, Systems On 4 ♣ / ♦ - Game Force 4 ♥ / ♠ -to play - Less than 21 HCP with 10 tricks in hand 5 ♣ / ♦ -to play - Less than 21 HCP with 10 tricks in hand

Other Positive Responses to 2 ♣ Openers OpenerResponder RebidderAdvancer 2♣2♣ 2 ♠ - shows at least a 5-card spade suit with 2 of the top 3 honors 2NT - shows at least a 5-card heart suit with 2 of the top 3 honors 3 ♣ - shows at least a 5-card club suit with 2 of the top 3 honors 3 ♦ - shows at least a 5-card diamond suit with 2 of the top 3 honors 3NT - no Aces or Kings – 9+ to 12 HCP; balanced 4NT - Quantitative 5NT - Quantitative After a positive suit response, 3NT is to play; a simple raise asks for a feature; a new suit (forcing) denies support; 4NT is Responder bids accordingly with a minimum, but may take control with slam-going values.

Opening 2 ♦ - Mini-Roman OpenerResponder RebidderAdvancer 2 ♦ - Mini-Roman Convention HCP; (any singleton) or 4 ♠ -4 ♥ -0-5 ♣ Note: discount singleton honors! 2 ♥ - offering a place to play - at least 3 hearts 2 ♠ - offering a place to play - at least 3 spades and less than 2 hearts 2NT - asks for singleton - typically with game intentions 4 ♣ - shows distribution 3 ♣ - denies 3 in either major – (5-5, 6-4, or 6-3) - pass or correct to 3 ♦ 3 ♦ - invitational - shows both majors 3 ♥ - invitational - shows Hearts & a Minor 3 ♠ - invitational - shows Spades and a Minor 3NT - invitational - shows both minors 4 ♣ - Shows 7 or more Hearts and slam interest with a fit.* 4 ♦ - Shows 7 or more Spades and slam interest with a fit.* 4 ♥ - Shows 7 or more Hearts and no slam interest. 4 ♠ - Shows 7 or more Spades and no slam interest. Over 4 ♣ or 4 ♦ Cue bid or bid 4NT with a fit, bid partner’s long suit - 4 ♥ or 4 ♠ without a fit. All 4-level bids are natural and non-forcing over interference Hands with (any singleton) distribution are typically difficult to bid well. The Mini-Roman convention is used to handle all HCP hands of this type. You will find that most pairs use the 2 ♦ opener as weak, showing 5-11 HCP and 6 diamonds. My experience shows that this bid generates better results.

Cute Hand Partner opens 2  You hold ♣   32 Bid 2NT! If partner bids 3 ♣, (hopefully) showing a singleton, you pass!

2 ♥ Flannery Convention OpenerResponder RebidderAdvancer 2 ♥ - Flannery HCP; 5 ♥ -4 ♠ 2 ♠ -to play 2NT - asks for fragment 3 ♣ / ♦ - 3 Clubs or Diamonds 4 ♣ / ♦ RKC for ♥ / ♠ 3 ♥ minimal - no singleton 4 ♣ / ♦ RKC for ♥ / ♠ 3 ♠ maximal - no singleton 4 ♣ / ♦ RKC for ♥ / ♠ 4 ♣ / ♦ - 4-card suit - void in the other 3 ♥ / ♠ - Invitational 3NT - to play Showing hands with 5 Hearts and 4 Spades with less than 16 HCP is a problem for most bidders, and as a result, the contract is usually played in Hearts with a 5-3 fit, while the superior 4-4 spade fit is never discovered. Most Players use 2 ♥ as a preemptive bid, easily finding a spade fit for the opponents. Flannery solves a real problem, and the 2 ♥ opener increases the likelihood that the hand will be played by the stronger side

2 ♥ Flannery Convention OpenerResponder RebidderAdvancer 2 ♥ - Flannery HCP; 5 ♥ -4 ♠ 2 ♠ -to play 2NT - asks for fragment 3 ♣ / ♦ - 3 Clubs or Diamonds 4 ♣ / ♦ RKC for ♥ / ♠ 3 ♥ minimal - no singleton 4 ♣ / ♦ RKC for ♥ / ♠ 3 ♠ maximal - no singleton 4 ♣ / ♦ RKC for ♥ / ♠ 4 ♣ / ♦ - 4-card suit - void in the other 3 ♥ / ♠ - Invitational 3NT - to play

Pass with the 9-11 HCP 5-card suit hand 2.Double 2NT – bid as if there was no double New suit – ‘McCabe’ shows spade support but is lead directing Raise – continues the preempt Redouble (weak) – asks partner to bid the next higher suit, which responder will pass or correct Fox-Lambert Raises Over Weak Two’s

OpenerResponder RebidderAdvancer 2NT to 21 HCP (consider 10's in your bid) 3♣3♣ asks for a 4 or 5 card major (Must be alerted – Puppet Stayman) 3 ♦ - Shows at least one 4-card major 3 of a major shows 4 cards in the other major 3NT shows both majors 4 ♣ - shows 5 ♥ /4 ♠ with slam interest (Smolen) 4 ♦ asks partner to bid a singleton, if possible, or 4 ♥ with a minimum hand and 4 ♠ with slam interest. (4NT is simple Blackwood – number of Aces, etc following 4 ♠ ) 4♦4♦ shows both majors with a singleton diamond 4♥4♥ shows both majors with a singleton club 3♥/♠3♥/♠ Shows a 5-card major 3NTDenies a 4 or 5-card major 3♦/♥3♦/♥ Transfer to the next suit – shows 5 or more cards in the suit 2NT and Puppet Stayman

2NT and Minor Suit Stayman After a 2NT opener, 3 ♠ is Minor Suit Stayman (MSS). It forces a 3NT bid by opener. It shows 5-5 in the minors or a single-suited minor with slam interest. This method right-sides the final contract by bidding the minor suit you don’t have.

3♠3♠ 3NTForced Response by Opener 4 ♣ by responder shows a long/strong diamond suit and slam interest 4 ♦ by opener indicates interest, right-sides the contract and is 0314 for Diamonds. 4 ♦ by responder denotes Clubs, etc; 4 ♥ (!) by opener is 0314 RKC for clubs; (can only be done with at least 2 KC) 4NT/5 ♣ by opener is to play. (Note: Responder can bid on, with extras) 4 ♥ by responder shows 5-5 or better in the minors with game interest 4 ♠ by responder shows 5-5 or better in the minors with slam interest 4NT is to play 5 ♣ / ♦ by opener sets the suit and is 0314 RKC for the bid suit 4NT* by responder shows 5-5 in the minors and enough scattered values for 4NT 5 ♣ / ♦ by opener is to play Any bid of 4/5/6NT by either side, except as noted above*, is to play. Partner can overrule with extras 2NT and Minor Suit Stayman

OpenerResponder RebidderAdvancer 2NT3NT - is to play 4 ♣ - Revised Gerber 4 ♦ - Shows 0 or 3 Aces 4 ♥ - Shows 1 or 4 Aces 4 ♠ - Shows 2 aces with a minimum hand 4NT – shows 2 Aces with a Maximum hand A 5 ♣ bid after any of the above responses, asks for the number of Kings 4♦/♥4♦/♥ Texas Transfer to the next higher suit 4NT is 1430 for the transferred-to suit 4NTQuantitative – asks partner to bid 6NT with a Maximum

OpenerResponder RebidderAdvancer 3 ♣ / ♦ / ♥ - Preemptive Transfers to the next suit (these 3-level bids are only apllowed at Regionals & higher) AcceptCan be passed; if not, any bid by opener is RKC for his own suit Jump to gameTo play – shows outside tricks. Any bid beyond is RKC by opener. 3NT/4 ♥ /4 ♠ To play; Any bid beyond is RKC by opener for his own suit 4NTRKC for opener’s suit Any other game bid by responder is invitational 3 ♠ - Transfer to 3NT (Gambling – AKQJxxx in ♣ or ♦ with no more than a Queen outside) 3NT – Transfer to 4 ♣ / ♦ - long, broken suit Any other bid by responder (eg: 4 ♦ ) is to play - even opposite a void These bids are made to right-side the contract. If the opener has a weak hand, it should be 7 cards with 8-10 HCP. The bid is also very useful with a good hand Eg. ♠ x ♥ Ax ♦ KQJxxxxx ♣ Ax The (unapposed) bidding should go 3 ♣ - 3 ♦ - 3 (0314 – showing 3 KC) Partner can make slam with as little as Axxx xxxx xx KQx. The bidding might proceed 3 ♠ - 4 ♣ - 5 ♣ - 6 ♦

3NT/4 ♥ /4 ♠ To play; Any bid beyond is RKC by opener for his own suit 4NTRKC for opener’s suit Any other game bid by responder is invitational 3 ♠ - Transfer to 3NT (Gambling – AKQJxxx in ♣ or ♦ with no more than a Queen outside) 3NT – Transfer to 4 ♣ / ♦ - long, broken suit Any other bid by responder (eg: 4 ♦ ) is to play - even opposite a void

4-Level Bids OpenerResponder 4 ♣ / ♦ - NAMYATS - Good transfer to Hearts or Spades - shows 8 1/2 tricks. Eg. Void ♥ KJ109xxx ♦ AQJ ♣ KJx, or ♠ AKxxxxxx ♥ Axx ♦ x ♣ x A bid of the intervening suit shows slam interest (Aces & Kings), and allows the strong hand to play. If opener does not bid their suit, they are bidding a void. 4 ♥ / ♠ - Preempt - Eg. ♠ Q109xxxxx ♥ Kx ♦ Qx ♣ x or better (rule of 2 or 3 if NV or V in first or second seat) The Rule of 2 or 3 refers to the number of tricks you think you might go down if doubled. If vulnerable, you should only bid if you think you’ll go down 2 or less tricks (for a penalty of 500 points). If non-vul, you can afford to go down 3 tricks – again for 500 points. Using this rule allows partner to assess whether or not he should advance the bid, holding a couple of aces.
