Parallelism

So….what is parallelism again? Parallelism, also known as parallel structure, is similarity of structure in a pair or series of related words, phrases, or clauses. Example of a sentence that is NOT parallel: I like to swim, to read, and eating ice cream. The fix: I like to swim, to read, and to eat ice cream.

Famous examples of parallelism "When you are right, you cannot be too radical; when you are wrong, you cannot be too conservative.“ – MLK Jr. "I don’t want to live on in my work. I want to live on in my apartment.“ – Woody Allen “Give me liberty, or give me death.” – Patrick Henry "Buy a bucket of chicken and have a barrel of fun.“ – old school KFC slogan

Parallelism I like TO read, TO write, and TO play. My hair is long, blonde, and straight. They walkED, talkED, jumpED, and nappED all in the same day. That girl is pretty amazing, pretty wonderful, and pretty beautiful. I took a toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental floss on vacation with me.

P a r a ll e li s m Example of taking it a step further and just writing a list: Rushing to do your homework might get it done, but taking your time to do your homework makes you get it done right. Example of what you can do stylistically: He did what he thought was right – he did what he knew – he did all he could.
