CLAREMONT McKENNA COLLEGE To Migrate or Not to Migrate?  Challenges:  Skepticism and Reluctance from experienced WebCT users  Tight timeline and limited resources  Not much migration experience in the Sakai community for WebCT users  Hello, anybody there, there, there…?  Lack of migration technologies for WebCT

CLAREMONT McKENNA COLLEGE How to Migrate in Time  Goal: To migrate all the contents off WebCT to Sakai by end of this school year  Sakai Early Adopters (SEA) and followers  Training  User Support at various levels  Migration technologies

CLAREMONT McKENNA COLLEGE Sakai Early Adopters (SEA)  What we offered to the SEAs: One-on-one training One-on-one consultation Manual course migration and resource allocation (to match individual WebCT course set- ups)

CLAREMONT McKENNA COLLEGE What We Learned from SEAs  Faculty are very busy  Be flexible with scheduling meetings, workshops, etc.  They have many questions and concerns regarding the migration process  Manual course migration is laborious and time consuming.  An auto-migration tool for content and quizzes is necessary to meet the target deadline!

CLAREMONT McKENNA COLLEGE Training and User Support  Training Format:  Overview followed by “Open Labs”  Handouts provided (login procedures, tool descriptions, etc.)  Training resources shared among other 5C campuses

CLAREMONT McKENNA COLLEGE Migration Technologies  Server-level auto migration tool (Developed by Harvey Mudd College with input from Claremont McKenna College)  Mapping the tools in WebCT and Sakai Mapping the tools in WebCT and Sakai

CLAREMONT McKENNA COLLEGE Are We There Yet? Almost! All archived courses have been migrated to Sakai All existing courses will be migrated by Mid May About 30 faculty members moved to Sakai in the past semester

CLAREMONT McKENNA COLLEGE Lessons Learned  Get the skeptics to participate in the SEA team  Provide workshops and support as much as possible  Ensure enough transition time and pilot time  Get involved in the Sakai community:  Join the Sakai Collab list-servs for updates (  Attend regional and national conferences  SakaiCAL on July 9, 2007  It’s not cheaper, at least initially!
