Introduction Of Main Characters:

Dr Manette: A doctor in France. He was sent into Bastille by Marquis St. Evremonde because he had tried to save the poor sister and brother; After 18 years life in prison, he was saved by his old servant----Defarge.

Lucie Manette: Daughter of Dr.Manette. When she was young, she was brought up by her English mother in England. Several years later, her mother died, and she was brought up by one banker. Before she was 17 years old, she always thought that her father had left the world already.

Monsieur Defarge: The old servant of Dr.Manette. And later he became the owner of one little wine shop in Paris. He, together with his wife(Madame Defarge), was for the revolution; and his wife was the right sister of the poor peasant sister & brother,who were badly treated by Marquis St.Evremonde.

Marquis St. Evremonde: Noble of France. He was very cruel to the poor. He always treated the peasants badly, and he became the main aim of the France revolution.

Charles Darnay: The nephew of Marquis St.Evremonde. He hated the way of life of the rich French nobles. So he left for London to teach French language and French literature to make his living. At last, he married Lucie.

Sydney Carton: The Rival(enemy) in love of Charles Darnay. In order to show his own love to Lucie, he entered the prison secretly to take the place of Charles Darnay at the last moment. He set Darnay free, and he himself willingly came to contribute his life.That is, he had his head cut off in order to make his love more beautiful.

Read the story silently and find out much about Dr.Manette. Father of Lucie Manette. His wife died when Lucie was a baby. He attended a peasant boy and a girl,both of whom died. He knew that they had been badly treated, so he was put in prison to keep his silence. He spent many years in the Bastille in Paris, here he used to make shoes. While in prison he became mentally disturbed, and his hair turned white. He returned to England and got gradually better and stronger.
