THE STORY OF EMMETT TILL

Background ~ Growing Up  Emmett Louis Till was born on July 25, 1941  Only child to Mamie and Louis Till  Stricken with polio at age 5 Polio = muscular disease Recovered but always had a slight stutter.  Lived in Chicago, IL

Mississippi Trip, 1955  His great Uncle Moses came to visit the family and invited Emmett and his cousin to come visit him in Mississippi.  Emmett wanted to go  His mother did not want him to go  Mother gave Emmett his father’s ring, which had the initial L.T. engraved on it.  His mother rushed him to the train station, and kissed him goodbye.  This is the last time she would see her son alive.

Incident at the Store  Emmett apparently flirted, whistled at, or touched the hand of Carolyn Bryant  What exactly happened, no one is certain.  Kids outside said she was going to get her pistol  Emmett scared, ran off What’s the big deal?

Threats and Kidnapping  A couple days after the incident, Roy Bryant and his half brother, J.W. Milam, arrived at the Wright home (where Emmett was staying), pounding on the door with a pistol  They were “looking for the boy who did the talking“  Moses explained that the boy was from the North and didn’t “know any better” he should just get off with a whipping.  Elizabeth Wright offered money but was sent back to bed.

Threats and Kidnapping  Roy and J.W. threatened Moses, who refused to give them access to Emmett  "How old are you, preacher?" Wright said that he was sixty-four. "If you make any trouble, you'll never live to be sixty-five.“  Moses led them to Emmett  Would you?  They took Emmett out in the middle of the night.

Missing and Murder  They found Emmett’s body days after in the Tallahatchie River.  The young man below who was only 14 years old was beaten and killed to look like…

Quick Write  What do you think happened to Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam?  Remember, this happened after Brown v. Board, but it was the deep south.

The Aftermath  Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam were arrested for the kidnapping and murder of Emmett Till.  Sadly, they were acquitted (let go with no punishment).

It Get’s Worse…  The two men sold their story to reporter William Bradford Huie for $4000.  They spoke freely of how they killed the young teen from Chicago.
