Unit 2 Vocabulary Story Elements

Literary Elements Conflict—The main problem that needs to be solved Exposition—the problem that puts the story in motion Complication—any problem that gets in the way of solving the conflict. Setting—the location and time the story takes place Characters—people in the story Theme—the lesson we can learn or the subject matter of the story

Literary Elements Climax—the highest point of conflict before the problems start getting solved Falling Action—the things that happen after the climax, usually when the problems are being solved Resolution—when the conflicts are resolved at the end of the story Foreshadowing—clues that give us ideas about what will happen later in the story Motif—a symbol that represents an idea or theme in the story

Literary Elements Verbal Irony—when someone says something but means the opposite Genre—a type of book or movie Irony—something that happens in the story that seems unusual or unexpected Imagery—when authors use great descriptive words that help you picture something in your head Mood—The emotion in a story (how the character feels). Tone--The author’s attitude about the character or his situation (how the author wants you to feel about the character).
