The Metric System Is used in nearly every country around the world. The United States of America doesn’t use the metric system for it’s primary measurement.
Metric System Notes Metric System. SI SI = Systems International or Metric System It is the universal language of scientist It is based on units of ten.

Metric System for Recording Measurments. Why do we use a standard system? So that measurements can be consistent among people from all over the world.
Metric Measurements and Conversions. Two terms to distinguish: Quantity : what one is actually measuring. Length: distance between points Volume: space.

Why?

Base Units Length: meter Mass: gram Volume: liter Time: second Temperature: Kelvin (Celsius + 273) Area: meter 2 Density: kg/m 3

Why Use Kelvin instead of Celsius 0 ° Kelvin is absolute zero: complete absence of heat, coldest it can be in the universe. 0 ° K is -273 ° C So…to get ° K from ° C you add 273 °.

Prefixes Kilo: 1000 Centi: 1/100 Milli: 1/1000 Ex: 1 kilogram=_________gram(s) Ex: 1 meter = ___________ cm(s) Ex: 1000 milligrams=____________gram(s)

Usage: When to use each prefix? – Kilo: large amounts – Regular base: medium – Milli: small amounts. -To measure the volume of 1 drop of water… -To measure the mass of Ms. Smith… -To measure the length of the science hallway…

Practice: To measure… 1. The surface area of a pond: 2. The distance between Rome & Paris: 3. The melting point of gold: 4. The distance an amoeba travels in 1 second: 5. The mass of a bacterial colony: 6. The volume of a 22 oz Coke:

Calculating the mean Mean = average. To determine: add numbers together and divide by amount of entries. Ex: What is the average water temperature in the samples below?

Relationships to English Units 1 meter = 3 ft 3 inches 1 mile = 1.6 kilometers 1 gallon = 3.7 liters 1 inch = 2.5 centimeters 1 ft = 30 cm 1 kg = 2.2 lbs.

Analogous units The mile is analogous with… The inch is analogous with… The pound is analogous with… The gallon/quart is analogous with… The foot/yard is analogous with…

Conversions How many kilometers are there in 5 miles? How many inches are there in 16 cm?

Conversions within metric: How many liters are there in 3.6 gallons? How many lbs in 63 kgs?
