Bell Ringer 8/30/11 NO TI-Nspires today!! Write and answer the following questions on lined paper in the classwork section of your binder: 1.What is the difference between a meter stick and a yard stick? 2.How do you measure the volume of an irregular shaped object? Finish Vocabulary: MassWeightVolumeDensity Metric SystemSIGraduated Cylinder ThermometerTriple-beam balanceMetric ruler Meniscus

Length The basic SI unit for measuring length is the meter (m) Metersticks – used to measure lengths close to a meter Metric rulers – used to measure lengths smaller than a meter A meter does not equal a yard (36” in a yard; 39 ½” in a meter)

Mass/Weight The basic SI unit for measuring mass is the kilogram (kg) The basic SI unit for measuring weight is a force called the newton (N) Mass and weight are different but related Mass measures the amount of matter in an object (mass remains the same regardless of gravity) Weight measures the force of gravity acting on an object

Volume Scientists use liters (L) and cubic centimeters (cm³) to measure volume Liters are used to measure liquids To measure a liquid use a graduated cylinder Cubic centimeters are used to measure solid objects To measure rectangular solids use l × w × h To measure irregular solids use water displacement

Density The SI unit for density is kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m³) Also commonly used are grams per milliliter (g/mL) and grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³) Density = Mass ÷ Volume The density of a substance is always the same no matter how much of the substance you have

Time/Temperature The second (s) is the SI unit used to measure time Kelvin (K) is the official SI unit for temperature Kelvin scale starts at 0 K (absolute zero) and only goes up On the celsius scale water freezes at O°C and boils at 100°C

Conversion Length 1km = 1,000m 1m = 100cm 1m = 1,000mm 1cm = 10mm Mass 1kg = 1,000g 1g = 1,000mg Volume 1L = 1,000mL 1L = 1,000cm³ 1mL = 1cm³

Measurement Practice: Table (find length and height) Pencil (find length) Sciencesaurus (find volume) Rock (find mass and density of 3 rocks – individual and combined) Pennies (find mass of 1 penny, 5 pennies, 10 pennies) Battery (find mass) Tape (find mass)
