The Battle of Vicksburg The battle of Vicksburg began on May 18, 1863 and carried on through June. The battle is also called the siege of Vicksburg. The confederate city of Vicksburg surrendered on July 4, 1863.

General Robert E. Lee Robert E. Lee was born in Stratford Hall Plantation, Westmore County, Virginia. He was born on January 19, He was the son of Major Henery Lee III. He was one of the Confederacy generals from the beginning of the civil war in 1861 until the end in He died on October 12, 1870.

Vicksburg, Mississippi The city of Vicksburg is on the east side of the Mississippi river. The Mississippi river played a huge part in the battle because supplies, food and ammunition were shipped to the soldiers. The city of Vicksburg is the only city in Warren county, Mississippi.

Strategies The Union strategy was to take Tennessee and it’s key rail lines and then to take the Mississippi river. The confederacy did not have strategy for the battle.

Victor of Vicksburg The Union won The Battle of Vicksburg. I think the Union won the battle because they had a plan and were more prepared than the confederacy

Uniforms The Union wore blue uniforms. The Confederacy wore gray uniforms. The Union uniforms were made of dyed wool. At the beginning of the war the confederacy did not have uniforms. Later in the war factories made the gray uniforms.

Spies Spies in the Civil War provided details on troop movements and strengths. If they were caught in disguise and not in uniform they would be hung. One of the Union spies was Harriett Tubman. One of the Confederacy spies was John Yates Beall.

Casualties The total casualties between the Union and the Confederacy is 19,233. The total casualties for the Union is 10,142. The total casualties for the Confederacy is 9,091. Many soldiers died of infection from their wounds.
