Outline of presentation Recent developments in STEM careers and IAG What are the developments? Where are the obstacles? What do we already do well? Where do we most need to focus? Who needs to be involved?

Recent developments A new statutory framework and guidance for LAs re IAG – published March 2010 The 12 standards will be given statutory force The CCIS computer system must run to underpin raising participation age Support to young people after first placements re the hardest to help - transition management focus Continuation of duty to co-operate section 139a for those with learning difficulties through Children’s Trusts Continuation of focus on safeguarding – but also a focus on STEM

Recent developments A new task force on the careers profession chaired by Dame Ruth Silver Thinking about careers advisers with STEM background A new service has just been tendered for the adult advancement careers service - not its name - we have won this contract here for the south side of the region

What are the obstacles? Great uncertainty re the election and cuts Not sure how well the messages and rumours about the above developments are understood by commissioners, partners and stakeholders Very little resource to meet needs of 250,000 customers currently registered – half an hour to guide a life for education based customers

What are the obstacles? What does IAG mean to communities? Nurse = nursing Teacher = teaching Social worker = social care IAGer – IAGagging = nonsense

What are the obstacles? Connexions exploded unmet need Support agenda very strong and valued by local authorities PAs stand often across region under the social care thresholds Insufficient recent focus on skills/economy in Connexions contracts Massive contact 99% of all year olds in Cornwall and Devon means huge exposure to personal and social issues of customer group Constantly undergoing major transition and reorganisation

What do we already do well? Customer satisfaction Staff development and training Contract compliance Leadership and management PAs are STEM ambassadors and work with education and employers Company is proud of its STEM contract

What do we already do well? Work with employers and parents We work in 171 schools and colleges, mostly well, in Devon and Cornwall Highest performing Activity Agreement contract Excellent follow up and offers under September Guarantee

How do we know? Won EFQM national award for customer satisfaction October 2009 Won EFQM national award for leadership October 2009 One of first 100 companies to win UK customer excellence awards March 2009 and re-awarded March th best place to work in public sector – Sunday Times March 2010 Best place for training and development Sunday Times March 2010 Won IiP Gold – 1% of companies have this March % contract compliance contracts March 2008, March 2010

What do we need to focus on? Removing duplication from the system of IAG Clarity of roles and contribution Accurate assessment of performance on the ground across all services 100% improved labour market intelligence and links with employers including STEM system is needed Better interpretation of all customer requirements re education, employment and training including STEM opportunities

What do we need to focus on? More personalised provision Improved financial awareness and career planning skills of customers particularly in STEMs Open career pathways leading to progression and sustainable opportunities

Who needs to be involved? Those who know about and can provide excellent labour market intelligence Those who can proivde excellent careers education Those who can plan and finance excellent and personalised provision Those who can provide and inspire customers re careers in STEM areas Parents are the greatest single influence on young people

Who needs to be involved? Parents must be well informed by accurate careers information and involved Parents must know where courses will lead and how successful they are Inspirational STEM practitioners People who can provide motivational work experience places People who can offer jobs and career opportunities particularly in new industries People who can really ensure career pathways and progression for individuals

What will work well? Excellent opportunities that are available for all Excellent careers education Excellent careers information, advice and guidance centred on individuals that connects future talent to future opportunities Support to put career plans into practice Lifelong independent careers guidance to accompany lifelong learning if we are serious about upskilling Is it rocket science?
