6.6 Analyze Surveys and Samples Math 1

6.6 Analyze Surveys and Samples Vocabulary GPS MM1D3. Students will relate samples to a population.

6.6 Analyze Surveys and Samples Vocabulary Have you ever thought about the surveys that you have answered? Were the questions fair? Why were you picked to take the survey? There are some important vocabulary that goes along with surveys and how the samples of people are chosen.

6.6 Analyze Surveys and Samples Vocabulary 1.) What is a survey? A survey is a study of one or more characteristics of a group. 2.) The entire group you want information about is called a population.

6.6 Analyze Surveys and Samples Vocabulary 3.) Do you have to survey the entire population? NO, a sample can be picked, which is part of a population. 4.) Can samples be picked fairly? Yes, in a random sample every member of the population has an equal chance of being selected.

6.6 Analyze Surveys and Samples Vocabulary There are also other types of samples. 5.) Stratified random sample – the population is divided into distinct groups, then members are selected at random from each group. 6.) Systematic sample – a rule is used to select members of the population.

6.6 Analyze Surveys and Samples Vocabulary 7.) Convenience sample – only members of the population who are easily accessible are selected. 8.) Do you think a convenience sample is fair YES or NO. Why? NO, because it is not a fair sample

6.6 Analyze Surveys and Samples Vocabulary 9.) Self-selected sample – members of the population volunteer. 10.) Representative sample – accurately reflects the characteristics of a population.

6.6 Analyze Surveys and Samples Vocabulary 11.) biased sample – sample not representative of the population. And last but not least… 12.) A question that encourages a particular response is a biased question.
