Trenches were mostly made by the soldiers. They used their hands to dig in and if they were lucky they got to use shovels. Then they added reinforcements to the outside of the trench; wood, tree logs, fence posts, sandbags, pretty much anything they could use. They were usually built at night before the enemy could arrive. Once they were made they could easily gun down oncoming enemies. HOW THE TRENCHES ARE MADE
