Be prepared to take some IMPORTANT notes. 1 May 2013

Historical Criticism To strive to understand a literary text as a product of the social, cultural, and intellectual context in which it was created To examine how the text was initially received by readers as well as how its reception has changed over time

Historical Criticism Advantages Works for some pieces obviously political or moral in nature Helps place allusions in proper classical, political, or biblical background as well as to consider the themes of works Recognizes that the message of a work — not just the vehicle for that message — is important Disadvantages “The Intentional Fallacy”— term for the belief that the meaning or value of a work lies in determining the author’s intent, which, unless the author has put into writing his/her intent, is not reliably discernable Some argue that such an approach is too judgmental

Historical Criticism A Checklist of Historical Critical Questions When was the work written? When was it published? How was it received by the critics and public? Why? What does the work’s reception reveal about the standards of taste and values during the time it was published and reviewed? What social attitudes and cultural practices related to the action of the work were prevalent during the time the work was written and published? To what extent can we understand the past as it is reflected in the literary work? To what extent does the work reflect differences from the ideas and values of its time? To what extent does the author’s history (biography) impact the work? How can we understand the work through a lens of that author’s life experiences?

So How About Avatar? Historical Criticism Practice Look at WALL-E through a historical lens. How is this movie impacted by the time in which it was made? Write a ½ page analysis of WALL-E through the historical lens. Remember: lit crit is NOT about “the right answers” – it’s about saying, “If you think of it in terms of ______”… Refer to the notes you’ve just taken, and talk through this together! Ask yourself the questions! Due next time!
