Presented by: Jack D. Hinterlong, Ed. D., Educational Consultant Guy Todnem, Professional Development Specialist SIP... Examing Data

8 Step Process 8 Steps: 1.Team Readiness 2.Data Sources 3.Data Analysis 4.Pose Hypotheses 5.Prioritize & Set Goals 6.Design Study & Strategies 7.Define Evaluation 8.Make a Commitment & Plan the Roll Out Student Data Family & Community Data Program & Structures Data Professional Practices Data

4 Lenses of Data Prioritize & Set Goals Study & Plan Successful Strategies Observe Patterns & Hypothesize Student Data Program & Structures Data Family & Community Data Professional Practices Data What data have we or could we collect as indicators of the effectiveness of our schools?

THE FOCUS: Improving Student Learning – of ALL Students THE PROCESS: Reflective Collaboration through Learning Teams

Data Analysis Broad to Specific Specific to Patterns Observing Patterns Professional Practice Patterns Program & Structures Patterns Family & Community Patterns Student Patterns LENS #1-- Student Data Examining Evidence of Success

State Assessment Analysis How do your students perform on the state and local assessments?

Broad Achievement Patterns ALL STUDENTS Observing All Students Over Time 1.Find your broad subject area results on the IIRC Website. 2.Find the % of ALL students at meets & exceeds at each grade and subject tested. 3.Make a team DATA TABLE. 4.Find and enter these data for previous years. 5.Label the table.

Team Observations & Discussion Observations List the broad patterns you see. List facts, not opinions. Hypotheses List opinions about possible reasons for the patterns. List any theories team members suggest. Record your observations. What do you see?

Hypotheses Achievement Data Hypothesis = an assumption made about the data pattern. Hypotheses Guiding Questions: 1. Why are our students performing way they are? 2. What in our systems and practices is causing our student to have these problems?

Observations (Looking for patterns) For each column heading on the table: write a statement about the number pattern write a statement comparing 03 to 04 For the bar graph: write a statement about patterns you see.

1.CONCERN –Student concern 2.SOURCE--Indicate data source. 3.WHEN--indicate time frame. 4.WHO--Indicate which students. 5.WHAT--Indicate which skills, which variables. 6.WHAT DIRECTION, BY HOW MUCH Report quantitative findings--in numbers! Writing Data Findings

Observations Examples Math is low. Math ISAT scores were lower in measurement for the past 3 yrs for 8 th grade than other subtests. Extended response low. Reading extended response scores in 3 rd and 5 th grade over the last 4 yrs are below 50% of the students M & E.
