Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits Factors Affecting the Food Supply WebQuest A search across the internet to figure out what factors affect what we eat & what new factors could come into play in the future. Click Introduction

Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits Introduction There are many things that influence what we can and cannot eat. It maybe how foods are grown (ENVIRONMENT), what we are told is safe for us to eat (GOVERNMENT), supply & demand (ECONOMICS) or new foods being created (TECHNOLOGY). This project will help you discover another way your food choices are affected. Click the TASK button

Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits Task Using information from your book as a guide, this project will look at the 4 factors that influence the foods that are available for us to eat. For each factor, you will be asked to link up to a provided site and answer a few questions regarding the page and your personal feelings on that matter. Questions will be numbered on each slide for you to follow. If you get lost at any point during the project, the blue buttons on the left will link you back to a specific page that you may need. Clicking the house icon will take you back to the beginning and clicking the INTRODUCTION button will take you back to this page. Pressing the arrow button on your keyboard will take you to the next slide. OR You may now click the PROCESS button to start.

Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits PROCESS This 1 st factor that affects how much food we have is the ENVIRONMENT. This involves air, water, soil, mineral resources, plants & animals. If there is a problem with any of these, it can greatly affect the cost and supply of food. If there is drought, then the price of vegetables will go up since there aren’t as many being grown. The next page describes another environmental factor that could really harm the American food supply and the farming industry. (Click your mouse or press the arrow button)

Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits PROCESS Environment Click on the link below to learn more about “agro-terrorism” and how it affects you. Only read until the heading, “Pork Barrel Politics” and then answer the questions. Close the website when you’re finished and continue to the next slide. CLICK HERE!!!! 1.Should America be worried about this? 2.In your opinion, what do you think is safer: letting Dr Wein publish his article so all Americans may find about this – or stopping its release so terrorists don’t get any ideas to poison our crops? Why? 3.What do you think would happen if a warning went out to America that this could happen?

Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits PROCESS Government The government has a large impact on the food supply. Laws govern the way foods are grown, processed, packaged and labeled. Government policies and agencies like the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) & FDA (Food & Drug Administration) determine what can and cannot be sold to Americans. One way they do this is by setting laws of what packaging can say about a food product. Some foods can be taken off of a shelf because of false information on a label. Some companies use tricks to get passed these laws, click here to read more about how companies get you to buy their product without being completely honest. Read “Label Loopholes & Package come-ons” only. HOW TO READ THE NUTRITION FACTS PACKAGE LABELclick here 1.Knowing that those certain words are not exact truths, will you think twice before eating them again or will you continue your eating habits. 2.What can you do to make sure that a product is what it says. (If it says it is all natural, how can you tell by the package?) 3.Did you learn anything new on this site?

Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits PROCESS Economics A basic economic concept is the law of supply & demand. This means if a person is willing to pay for a product, producers will provide it. Consumer demands for a certain product go way beyond what Wal-Mart stocks their shelves with. Some foods like coffee & sugar come from far-off places. Many countries where this food is grown have large amounts of poor families. So, instead of the land in their country being used to grow plants for them to eat, they are used to grow big exports (like sugar & coffee) that are sent around the world. This means that the rich landowners get richer, and the poor families go hungry. Therefore, their food supply has been affected by economics. 1.How does reading about the poor families in other countries make you feel? 2.Research a website/organization that helps with the world hunger situation. You can GOOGLE this topic and read about a website of your choice that wants to end world hunger. For this question, tell me the site that you read about and what the organization does. Then, tell me if you would ever be interested in helping this organization, and how would you do that (if you could). 1 paragraph minimum, please.GOOGLE

Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits Process Technology BIOENGINEERING is when the genetic makeup of a plant is changed in some way. Many agricultural companies are using plants that have been bioengineered to keep them from rotting, grow bigger, or ward off harmful insects. Currently, when a food has undergone bioengineering, the package does not have to be labeled, therefore not letting the consumer know. Read the following section of an article explaining what bioengineering means, and the FDA’s plan to inform the public. DO NOT read after “Public Input”section 1.What is a positive aspect of some foods being BIOENGINEERED? 2.What would happen if every product that contained these foods was labeled as such? 3.Would you buy these foods? How would you feel if you knew you already were? 4.If you could specifically change a fruit or vegetable in some way, what would you do? (taste, how it’s grown, how big it is, no seeds, different color) WHY?

Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits Evaluation Please refer back to your paper and make sure that you have fully answered all of the following questions. 4.Knowing that those certain words are not exact truths, will you think twice before eating them again or will you continue your eating habits. 5.What can you do to make sure that a product is what it says. (If it says it is all natural, how can you tell by the package?) 6.Did you learn anything new on this site? 7.How does reading about the poor families in other countries make you feel? 8.Research a website/organization that helps with the world hunger situation. You can GOOGLE this topic and read about a website of your choice that wants to end world hunger. For this question, tell me the site that you read about and what the organization does. Then, tell me if you would ever be interested in helping this organization, and how would you do that (if you could). 1 paragraph minimum, please. 9.What is a positive aspect of some foods being BIOENGINEERED? 10.What would happen if every product that contained these foods was labeled as such? 11.Would you buy these foods? How would you feel if you knew you already were? 12.If you could specifically change a fruit or vegetable in some way, what would you do? (taste, how it’s grown, how big it is, no seeds, different color) WHY?

Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits Conclusion Please make sure that every answer is written in a complete sentence and is not a “one-word” answer. To receive full credit on this assignment, you must have written at least 2 sentences or more for each question unless otherwise stated.
