Presentation transcript:

What is a Landform?

~a natural formation or area of land~ Landform ~a natural formation or area of land~

~a large body of salt water~ Oceans ~a large body of salt water~ There are 5 oceans on the earth. Oceans cover nearly 71 percent of Earth's surface.

River ~fresh water that flows across the surface of the land~ Most rivers flow to the ocean.

~a landform that is lower than the surrounding area~ Valley ~a landform that is lower than the surrounding area~ Valleys are often found between hills, mountains, and plateaus. Water from higher areas can flow down into valleys, creating rivers and streams.

Mountain ~a landform that rises above the surrounding area, but it has a peak~ A row of connected mountains is called a range. The longest mountain range is the Andes Mountains of South America, which extends for 4,400 miles and goes through seven countries.

Plateau ~similar to a mountain, but it has a flat surface on top~ One of the largest plateaus is the continent of Africa.

Hill ~rises above the surrounding area and has a rounded top.~ Hills look like bumps in the earth.

Canyon ~a deep, narrow valley with steep sides~ The Grand Canyon is 277 miles long.

Volcano ~a mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten rock, below the surface of the earth~ Volcanoes are formed when magma from within the Earth's upper mantle works its way to the surface.

YOUR TURN! IT IS YOUR TURN TO SHOW ME WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT LANDFORMS! YOU WILL BE MAKING A FLIPBOOK THAT EXPLAINS 5 DIFFERENT LANDFORMS THAT WE CAN FIND IN UTAH. I WILL SHOW YOU HOW TO MAKE A FLIPBOOK
