Dancing Raisins and The Scientific Method 6th Grade Science

Scientific Method This is a simple review of the scientific method. You should already know this, but since we understand that over the summer information tends to fall out of your head we will review it together.

Steps of the Scientific Method State the question Form a hypothesis Test the hypothesis Record and study data Analyze the results Draw a conclusion Communicate Results

Dancing Raisins Materials 7-UP or Sprite Water Clear glass or cup Fresh Raisins

State the Question What question could we ask based on the materials we have available? What will happen to the raisins when you put them in sprite? Water? Write down the question.

Form a Hypothesis What do you think will happen when we put the raisin in the sprite? Water? Write down your hypothesis.

Test the Hypothesis Let’s test our hypothesis. Put the raisin in the sprite. Put the raisin the water.

Record and Study Data What happened to the raisin in the Sprite? Write it. What happened to the raisin in the water?

Independent and Dependent Variables Independent and dependent variables are related to one another. The Independent variable is what you, the experimenter, changes in order to do your experiment. The dependent variable is what changes when the independent variable changes - the dependent variable depends on the outcome of the independent variable.

Independent and Dependent Variables In our raisin experiment, what part is the independent variable? Write it down. The different types of liquid. What part is the dependent variable? Write it down The behavior of the raisins.

Draw a Conclusion Why do you think the raisins behaved the way they did? Think about it . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Write it Let’s share

Experiments With Sponge Bob and Mr. Krabs

Experiments with Sponge Bob Mr. Krabs created a secret ingredient for a breath mint that he thinks will “cure’ the bad breath people get from eating crabby patties at the Krusty Krab. What question was he asking in this experiment?

Experiments with Sponge Bob He asked 100 customers with a history of bad breath to try his new breath mint. He had 50 customers (group A) eat a breath mint after they finished eating a crabby patty. The other 50 (group B) also received a breath mint after they finished the sandwich, however it was just a regular breath mint and didn’t have the secret ingredient.

Can You Create a Hypothesis for Mr. Krabs’ Experiment?

Experiments with Sponge Bob Both groups were told that they were getting the breath mint that would cure their bad breath. Two hours after eating the crabby patties . . . .

Experiments with Sponge Bob Thirty customers in Group A reported having better breath than they normally had after eating crabby patties. Ten customers in Group B reported having better breath than they normally had after eating crabby patties.

Have to Know Knowledge: CONTROL GROUP What is it? In an experiment it is the group of test subjects that is not given anything different and nothing is changed for.

Questions Which people are in the control group? What is the independent variable? What is the dependent variable? What should Mr. Krabs’ conclusion be? Why do you think 10 people in group B reported fresher breath?
