Presentation transcript:

Global warming

non-renewable sources Do you know any kind of energy resources? Sources of energy coal oil natural gas wind (wind power) sun (solar energy) water (hydro-electric power) uranium (nuclear energy) plant waste (biomass energy) the sea (tidal energy) hot springs (geothermal (地热的) energy) non-renewable sources renewable sources

What is fossil fuel? Ancient animal and plant material below the surface of the earth with a high carbon content, such as coal, oil and natural gas, which can be burnt to produce energy. Also known as non-renewable energy because once they are used they have gone forever; they cannot be renewed.

We use much energy in our daily life, what is the effect of using energy on our world? The use of energy Give off carbon dioxide, other wasted gases and heat into the air greenhouse effect The earth is becoming warmer and warmer. (global warming)

What is the greenhouse made and used for? A greenhouse is made of glass and is used for growing plants, especially during cold weather. Green house Greenhouse Effect

greenhouse effect

How does it work? The air inside is warm because the glass traps the heat from the sun and keeps it from escaping. This makes the greenhouse heat up and so the plants can grow throughout the cold period.

What do you think greenhouse gases do ? In the atmosphere surrounding the earth there are gases called “greenhouse gases”, including carbon dioxide, methane (甲烷, 沼气) and water vapor. What do you think greenhouse gases do ? Greenhouse gases perform the same function as the glass in a greenhouse: they trap the heat of the sun and keep the air surrounding the earth warm. This is called the greenhouse effect.

The Earth is Becoming Warmer —But does it Matter? Under this greenhouse effect, what happened? Reading The Earth is Becoming Warmer —But does it Matter?

1. Skim the text and get the main idea. A. When the “greenhouse effect” started B. What causes the “greenhouse effect” C. Dr. Janice Foster’s theory on the “greenhouse effect” The fact that the earth is becoming warmer and different theories about it. 2. Who wrote the magazine article? What is the name of the magazine? Sophie Armstrong, Earth Care.

2.Match the main idea of each paragraph No one knows what the effects of global warming will be. Part one: Part two: Part three: Part four: Para. 1 Introduce a debate over the issue of global warming. Para. 2-5 How global warming comes about. Para. 6 Two different attitudes among scientists towards global warming. Para. 7

Introduce a debate over the issue of global warming. main idea of each part writing techniques (Paragraph 1) Raising a question Introduce a debate over the issue of global warming. What is the purpose of the first paragraph? To introduce the topic.

Illustrate how global warming comes about. main idea of each part writing techniques (Paragraphs 2-5 ) Giving examples, using graphs, explanation. Illustrate how global warming comes about. (Paragraphs 6 ) List two different attitudes among scientists towards global warming. Giving examples, making contrast.

Using a question, leaving readers to think over the issue. main idea of each part writing techniques (Paragraph 7 ) Using a question, leaving readers to think over the issue. It's up to readers to think and decide whether people should do something about global warming or not.

Detailed Reading 1. What are the names of the three scientists mentioned in the article? They are Dr. Janice Foster, Charles Keeling and George Hambley. 2. What do they think about global warming? Do they agree with one another? They don't agree with each other.

the names of the scientists contribution or ideas He found out the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from 1957 to 1977. Charles Keeling He believed that people have cause the increase in the earth’s temperature through the burning of fossil fuels.and he had passive idea about global warming. Dr Janice Foster George Hambley He had a positive idea about global warming.

4. What are the two graphs about? Graph I shows the temperature increase of one degree Fahrenheit between 1860 to 2000. Graph 2 is about the carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere, 1958--1990. 5. What are the diagrams for? To illustrate points by providing evidence.

True or false? T 1.The temperature in the last century didn’t seem to increase much. 2.Everyone believes that global warming is caused by the activities of humans. 3.Janice Foster believes she can measure the future global rise in temperature. 4.The rise in carbon dioxide is causing a steady increase in global warming. 5.George Hambley believes that global warming will do good rather than harm to the earth. 6.It is clear what the effects of global warming will be. T F T T F

Interview: Have you ever used plastic bags to store something in your daily life ? Why do you use plastic bags ? Plastic bags have been given at a cost since June 1, 2008. 1. What do you think of this news? 2. What will you use to take the place of plastic bags when shopping? 3. What are the advantages of not using plastic bags?

In our daily life, we can do these things : 1.Turn off the tap when cleaning your teeth. 2. Recycle paper and glass. 3. Walk or cycle everywhere. 4. Turn off the lights when your are not in the room. 5. Get something repaired rather than buy a new one. 6. Use both sides of a sheet of paper. 7. Try not to use one-time-use box/cup/chopsticks. 8. Take a bag with you when you go shopping. 9. Use rechargeable (可充电的) batteries. 10. Use products that save energy. 11. Let the air-condition remain 26 ℃.

What can we do about global warming? using language What can we do about global warming?

Reading 1.Who are the writers of the letters? Ouyang Guang and the editor of Earth Care. Read Ouyang’s email and answer: 2.What’s the purpose of Ouyang Guang’s letter? To get some suggestions for what he can do about global warming.

3. What are Ouyang Guang’s two concerns? The first is that he feels that individuals can have little effect on huge environmental problems. The second is that he is not sure where to start with his project. 4. Which is not the reason why Ouyang Guang writes the letter? He is doing a project on global warming. B. He feels individuals can affect huge environmental problems. C. He isn’t sure where to start with his project. D. He wants to get some suggestions from Earth Care.

Read Earth Care’s reply and answer: 5. Does Earth Care agree with Ouyang Guang’s opinion that individuals can have little effect? No, Earth Care doesn’t agree.

6.What suggestions does Earth Care give him? Turn electrical appliances off when not using them. Don’t turn up the heat, put on more clothes. Walk or ride a bike, don’t drive. Recycle. Buy things made from recycled materials. Buy products that use less energy. Plant trees. Talk with family and friends about global warming.

Earth Care’s suggestions 7. List Earth Care’s suggestions and tell whether you think you can carry them out. Earth Care’s suggestions Carry out 1. Turn electrical appliances off when not using them. 2.Don’t turn up the heat, put on more clothes. 3. Walk or ride a bike, don’t drive. 4.Recycle. 5. Buy things made from recycled materials. 6. Buy products that use less energy. 7. Plant trees. 8. Talk with family and friends about global warming.

8. Which is not true according to the editor’s letter? A. Together, individuals can make a difference to environmental problems. B. Individuals must put up with pollution. C. Many activities individuals do can produce carbon dioxide. D. Individuals can save energy to slow down global warming.

Group Discussion What else should our government do to slow down global warming?
