What is No Child Left Behind? Education act signed into law in 2002 that aims to: Ensure that every student has a high-quality education Challenge and motivate students Provide highly qualified teachers, who use proven teaching methods Ensure a safe, drug free learning environment

What is Title I? Title I is the largest federal assistance program for our nations schools. It is based on the percentage of students on free or reduced lunch. In , 67% of students at Largo Middle School were on free or reduced lunch. This year we are at about the same percentage. The goal of Title I is a higher quality of education for every child. The program is NEW to middle and high schools this year in Pinellas County.

How Title I Works The federal government provides funding to states each year for Title I. The Florida Department of Education sends the money to the district. The school district identifies eligible schools and provides Title I funds.

Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) No Child Left Behind allows the U.S. The Department of Education to determine how every public school and school district in the country is performing academically according to results on standardized tests (FCAT). The goal is for ALL students to be proficient (at grade level) in reading, writing, and math by Schools that receive Title I funds must make AYP every year.

Parents Rights Be involved and request regular meetings/conferences to express your opinions and concerns Be provided information on your childs level of achievement on assessments like FCAT in reading/language arts, mathematics, and science Request and receive information on the qualifications of your childs teachers Be informed if your child is taught by a non- highly qualified teacher for four or more consecutive weeks

School Accountability Report Card School Public Accountability Report (SPAR) provides parents and the community with important information about each public school like: Demographic data School safety and climate for learning information Academic data Class sizes Teacher and staff information Curriculum and instruction descriptions AYP information Available at the school office or online at prd.doe.state.fl.us/eds/nclbspar/index.cfm

Educational Standards Floridas academic content standards establish high expectations for all students. Next Generation Sunshine State Standards identify what your child needs to know and be able to do in all content areas. Information located at: /FLStandardSearch.aspx

Measuring Student Success Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT)Grades 3-11 Florida Assessment for Instruction in Reading (FAIR)- 3 times a year through Lang Arts and Reading classes Glencoe Writing Assessment- 8 th grade Math and Science Progress Monitoring Assessments

FCAT (Grades 3-11) *April 11-22, 2011* Students tested on: Reading/Language Arts Mathematics Science WritingMarch 1-3, 2011 Information on FCAT may be found at:

Title I Funds Largo Middle School was provided $207,344 this year to pay for services and programs for our students. Title I funds pay for the following: Reading Coach, Technology Specialist, Title I Coordinator 2 part time Title I hourly teachers to support level 1 and 2 students with one-one-one and small group reading and math interventions Parent involvement events, activities, and materials Professional Development/training for the staff Instructional materials and technology like Smart Boards and software for different subject areas

Who decides how funds are used? Every school has a School Advisory Council (SAC) composed of: -Parents, teachers, staff members other than teachers, the principal, and students The SAC and staff determines how to use Title I funds.

Working together Title I law requires that all Title I schools and families work together. How we work together is listed in our: School Level Parental Involvement Policy and School Improvement Plan/SIP (in front office and on school website) Parent-School Compact (coming home next week)

Questions? * Check out our school website under the Title I link * Mrs. Henderson can be reached at ext or by Thank you so much for your interest in Title I!

Parent-School Compact - A compact outlines how parent, the staff, and students will share the responsibility for improved student achievement. At the end of this year, the SAC will review and revise the compact. - The compact is signed by the: parent, student, and a teacher or staff member - Please be sure to sign a compact before you leave tonight and print your childs name on the top of the compact. We will take the yellow copy and you can keep the white copy. THANK YOU!
