The Dermis

Dermis  Composed of dense connective tissue  The Dermis is strong and stretchy (elastic)  Leather goods are made from the dermis of animals.  The dermis is composed of two layers The papillary layer, located just under the stratum basale. The folds and loops of the papillary layer gives you fingerprints! Most of the nerve receptors are located here The papillary layer, located just under the stratum basale. The reticular layer is the deepest skin. It contains sweat and oil glands, blood vessels, and deep pressure receptors The reticular layer is the deepest skin. It contains sweat and oil glands, blood vessels, and deep pressure receptors

Skin Color  Three things can contribute to skin color 1. The pigment Melanin. The more you make the darker you are. 1. The pigment Melanin. The more you make the darker you are. 2. The pigment Carotene. Found in yellow and orange foods (carrots). This pigment is deposited in the stratum corneum and gives the skin a yellowish or orangish color. 2. The pigment Carotene. Skin is naturally transparent, if you have an abundance of capillaries near the surface, you may have pink or red skin 3. The pigment Hemoglobin. Found in red blood cells. Skin colors have meaning!  Redness (erythema): Embarrassment, fever, hyperyension, inflammation, allergy

 Pallor (blanching) – Skin becomes pale. Caused by anger, fear, anemia, low blood pressure, impaired blood flow

 Jaundice – a yellow cast, caused by the liver producing too much bile. Common in infants

 Bruising (hemotomas)– Black or blue marks that show where blood has escaped from the circulatory system and clotted in the tissues. May signify low Vitamin C or hemophilia
