February 18, 2015 ENGR B47 Lecture#6 Introduction to Engineering and Design Personal Assessment

Financial Aid Workshop Especially for first generation students Get info on numerous Fin. Aid questions  When are FAFSA forms due?  What has changed with the Dream Act?  Am I turning in the right forms? (at the right times?) Workshop on February 25  3pm - 5pm  Room SS-151 (?)  Run by: Isabella Castenada & Evette Lara Contact me if need further info 2

SOLIDWORKS Software Will use EXTENSIVELY in Project #2 in lab Can obtain student license if in INDR B42 (?)  INDR courses are valuable in & of themselves  Extra software a bonus Veterans  Can obtain student edition for $20  Typically costs >$150 for students) There more with their own license the better  Limited laptop availability in SE-45  Want more people gaining familiarity with software 3

Engineering Clubs on Campus Engineers Club  Design Competition on February 28  Meetings on Tuesdays 11am-12pm in MS-12 HOPES (Hispanic Org. Promoting Engineering & Science)  Planning campus UC Berkeley / Davis  Meetings on Thursday 12:15pm in SE-53 WISE (Women in Science & Engineering)  Meetings on Wednesdays 12:15pm in MS-12*  Contact me if need further info 4 * As of last semester

Review: Engineering Disciplines Grading in Progress Presentation Feedback  Reading off the screen  Start a conversation, not a lecture  Larger fonts, fewer words, more pictures Report Feedback  PDFs better  Be consistent with footnotes Removed from body text Use MS Word features built-in 5

Review: Engineering Disciplines Any more to add?  Some groups were cut short  Some very interesting info CompE vs. EE ABET accreditation after degree Petroleum vs. Chemical (and school availability) Information changes fast  Get used to seeking new numbers / data  Seek multiple sources 6

Review: Engineering Disciplines Final notes:  It’s a very diverse profession  Keep seeking new info  Don’t plan on doing one thing for your whole career The best job you’ll ever have hasn’t been invented yet - Quote from Professional Development specialist at a seminar I attended in grad school

Ever More Notes Presentations in lab next Monday & Tuesday Grading Breakdown*  Physical Device (45%)  Presentation (35%)  Peer evaluation (20%) 8 * See old slides for more info

LED Booklight Presentations Next Monday & Tuesday in your lab Schedule  minutes: last minute prep  minutes per presentation Bring PowerPoint file on USB (as backup, even if using Prezi as first choice) Will take volunteers day of Presentation  LOTS OF PICTURES  Tell a story  What tradeoffs decisions were there? (Why did you choose what you chose?)  What did it look like at the beginning? (Compared to the end?)  What were the roadblocks? How did you overcome? 9 Less for formal than Engineering Disciplines. Tell a good story. Help your peers learn.

Just... One... Last... Note First guest speaker coming on Monday  BC alumnus  Works for local Mechanical Engineering firm DON’T. BE. LATE.  Taking time out of his day without compensation  Use as a resource  Represent your College / Program well Questions are good great 10

The Next Big Thing: Personal Assessment 11

Know Thyself Where does your time go? How do you learn best? With whom do you work well? (and not so well?) Why do you want to be an engineer? What would most likely cause you to fail? How will you avoid it? Over the next 2-3 weeks you’ll think about these things and then give me some answers 12

Tentative: Likely to change with guest speakers, pace in class, etc.

An Infinite Number of Variables Personalities as puzzle pieces  Not “good” or “bad”  Some fit well together...  Others not so much For homework  Take free personality test (recommended site, see below)recommended site  Takes ~ 10 mins.  Might be fun (weird?)  What seems accurate? Not? 14 * Image Source: International Business TimesInternational Business Times

Myers-Briggs® Type Indicator Psychological tool in common use View output  Personality traits  Famous examples  Prescriptions for interacting with others This isn’t a fingerprint or a blood test  It’s value is that it makes you think  More information for future reflection
