Orca and Humpback Whale There are five different groups of animals with vertebrates. Mammals Reptiles Fish Amphibians Birds

Mammal Characteristics: All mammals are warm blooded. Most mammals live on land. Dolphins, whales and manatees are mammals that live in salt water. Baby mammals are born alive and they drink their mother’s milk.

The Orca Whale and the Humpback Whale They are both Mammals. They both live in salt water and have adapted to the cold by having a layer of blubber.

Most Mammals have these characteristics. Some whales have teeth for chewing. Some whales have baleen and use these to filter their food. They all have flukes or tails for swimming.

Information About Whales They have eyes and ears to help them find food. The Orca’s teeth help him catch their food and chew.

Here’s some details about Humpback Whales. Some Whales do NOT have teeth. The Humpback whale is a baleen whale. Baleen is like a stringy curtain. It hangs down in their mouth and catches krill.

Humpback Whales A group of Humpback whales form a large circle. They blow bubbles. The krill are trapped and the whales can eat them.

Humpback Whales The Humpback whale is like all mammals. Baby whales are born alive. Their mom helps them make it to the top to take their first breathe.

A Humpback Whale A humpback can live up to 50 years. They can jump on top of the water. That is called breaching. They can swim on their backs with both flippers in the air.

Orca Whales As a toothed whale, the Orca has a powerful jaw. Groups of Orca circle around schools of fish and then slap them with their tail. They work together so that all the whales can eat lots of small fish.

Orca or Killer Whales. Like many whales the Orca has teeth. It eats squid, crabs, turtles, octopus, and even other small whales!

Orca Whales Orca Whales live in the Arctic ocean. The Orca Whale migrates south for the winter. Migrate means that the Orca Whales travels hundreds of miles each and every day to get to warmer waters.

Orca Whales Orca Whales live in icy arctic waters. They live in the deep waters instead of shallow waters. They migrate in groups called pods. They do this for protection. Pods can have up to 100 whales.

Humpback Whales and Orca Whales We hope you’ve learned a lot about Humpback Whales and Orca Whales. Thank you for enjoying our power point.
