Presentation transcript:

There are four major influences that have shaped my teaching philosophy.  My father spent 30 years in the United States Navy..

 Part of my education took place in the South during the Civil Rights Movement.

 At the age of 21, I served as an artillery officer in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

 Following military service, I served and protected the citizens of the State of California as a Highway Patrolman for thirteen years.

I experienced first-hand the abuses of history, a history that justified exploitation and racism.

My philosophy of teaching is two-fold: First: I teach students to understand why we live under the rule of law, and how laws are created, enforced, interpreted, and changed. This study includes criminal, civil, and constitutional law.

Second: I teach young people with a deep desire to better oneself through the acquisition of knowledge and a better understanding of the complexities of the world we live in. you

When we discuss and investigate topics in class, we will strive to move beyond a "merely verbal" understanding, because you will start to see the implications a particular idea could have on our nation and community.

Our communities are diverse, so I will try to help you understand the complexity of our nation by understanding the relationship between geography, culture, folklore, political ideologies and how they have shaped our nation.

In addition to teaching about the role of laws in our lives, I will also try to motivate you to think critically, to demand more of yourselves, and to find new creative ways of problem solving.

Throughout the school year, I discuss and reinforce basic values of morality and ethics that I believe will be of to benefit you throughout your daily lives.

Ten Rules to Success 1. Be On Time – Tardiness and absences affect your grade/work

2. Be Prepared – Have necessary materials – paper, pencil and an insatiable desire to learn ready everyday Ten Rules to Success (Continued)

3. Be On Task – Use your time wisely listen to lecture/Stay awake Ten Rules to Success (Continued)

4. Be Respectful – To classmates and your instructors instructor Ten Rules to Success (Continued)

5. Be Responsible – Complete your assignments and do you best Ten Rules to Success (Continued)

6. Be Honest – In all you say and do Ten Rules to Success (Continued)

7. Be Productive – Apply the most amount of effort to the best of your ability in the time you have to achieve your goal Ten Rules to Success (Continued)

Ten Rules to Success (Continued) 8. Be Confident – Believe in yourself and have faith in your abilities

Ten Rules to Success (Continued) 9. Be Passionate – Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm

Ten Rules to Success (Continued) 10. Be Persistent – Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up

We will study race relations, gender stereotypes, the role of activism, and freedom versus the need for order in modern society.

I choose readings and films that will broaden your outlook on our world and help you to become more open-minded.

By encouraging you to think for yourself and respect the views of others, I hope you will better understand the complexities of our nations laws and be better informed citizens.

When you are able to make informed decisions about the past and present based on what you have learned, I have been successful in encouraging you to become life long learners.
