Are you in the giving mood? In addition to the supplies you sent in, there are a couple of extra things we could use in the classrooms. –For example: bottles of Clorox wipes, zip lock bags and baskets. Likewise as we continue throughout the year, we will be asking for different materials for different projects. Thanks in advance for these extra supplies.

Library Library day is on Friday. Students need to bring their books back on Thursday so that on Friday we will all be ready to check out. If your student forgets to bring their books on Thursday, please have them bring it on Friday.

Birthday Celebrations Birthdays are fun to celebrate. However, we are short on time and have to be aware of food allergies. Therefore, if your child would like to bring in a snack to celebrate his/her birthday we ask the following: –We will celebrate birthdays at 2:05pm, which will take place in your child’s afternoon class. –Please bring in cupcakes, muffin, cookies, cut up fruit, etc –If you bring in a drink it must be in individual boxes. –In addition, if you don’t want to bring food, you could bring small prizes for the kids (ex. erasers., pencils, stickers etc.) * We have a handful of students with serious food allergies so please be extra mindful when bringing in birthday treats.

Tally Mark Sheet and Marble Jar Each class has there own tally mark sheet and marble jar. These two things are what Miss Valle and I use for behavior management.

Responsive Classroom Responsive Classroom is a research- and evidence-based approach to elementary education that leads to greater teacher effectiveness, higher student achievement, and improved school climate. Teaching practices are based upon –Knowledge of how children learn developmentally, culturally, and individually –Awareness that social and accademic learning go hand in hand. –The belief that all children want to learn and can learn –CARES: Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy, Self- Control Outcomes: - Increases social skills and academic engagement - Establishes positive classroom climate - Increases learning investment and independence - Decreases disruptive behaviors

Classroom Management Manejamiento del salón Positive reinforcement/ Hacer lo correcto es enfatizado Responsible list/ Lista de responsables Collaborative problem-solving - Work together with students to solve academic and social problems and teach them skills for solving problems with increasing independence Teacher Language - Reinforcing, Reminding, and Redirecting – Using words as tools to promote learning community, and self-discipline Logical Consequences – Respond to misbehavior with consequences that are supportive of students’ efforts to learn how to fix their mistakes “Take a Break” Chair In cases of extreme behaviors, we will address administration or school counselor as necessary. Fighting, bullying, and threats are immediately reported to administration.

Spanish Homework Each day your child will bring a marble notebook with Spanish homework glued on a page and a plastic envelope with Spanish books. These activities need to be done daily and returned to school the next day. I will keep a record of “completed/ not completed” of the homework. At the end of each reporting period they will get a small prize for completion of homework.

Spanish Homework The Spanish homework will consist of Language, Science and/or Math activities. These activities relate, build on, reinforce, and/or enhance learning in the classroom. Parents should encourage their children to complete the work neatly and try to the best of their ability. In addition, students should have 20 minutes of reading or being read to every day, English or Spanish. In the “Sobre de Lectura” kids will bring Spanish books to read. Every week they will get new books. Your child must bring to school everyday the “Sobre de lectura”.

Dismissal Please or send in notes for changes in dismissal for your child before 11 a.m. IF AN OR NOTE IS NOT SENT, YOUR CHILD WILL BE SENT HOME AS USUAL. THIS IS THE LAW.

Volunteers Needed Volunteers are definitely wanted and appreciated in our first grade classroom. There are many different ways that you can help. Please complete the form in this handout and let us know what works for you. We will contact you as needed.

October 8 and 9th Fall Conferences - Remember that if you have another child at Key, your conferences have already been scheduled by the office and can not be changed. -Please fill out our preference sheet to let us know if you would rather come in the morning or the afternoon, as well as which day works better for you. We will do our best to accommodate everyone. -Our days will be full so please be mindful of our schedule and your 20 minute time slot.

Final Things Please make sure you have filled out the sign in sheet, volunteer sheet directory correction form and conference preference sheet. Grab an apple from the “Giving Tree” if you are in a giving mood. Make sure you grab a copy of the packets with information on the 1 st grade curriculum as well as a copy of the power point presentation.

Thank You For Coming! Thank you so much for coming. We look forward to working with you and your child through out the school year. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to ask us.
