Strategies for Memorization Spanish One

Memorization l Everything that we do in learning a language, at some point, comes back to basic memorization and repetition. All of us memorize things everyday. Our effectiveness depends on what we do and how we do it.

Memorization l Three Basic Factors 1. focus an environment free of distractions 2. motivation a willingness to do what it takes 3. techniques

Memorization l Discover what your preferred learning style is: a. visual b. auditory c. kinesthetic d. Some combination

Memorization l Visual 70-80%: Use visual clues, ie…color, size, pictures, graphic organizers, etc. to recall needed information.

Memorization l Auditory Use auditory clues, ie…active listening, verbalizing, repetitive listening, setting things to music or rhythm, etc. to recall needed information.

Memorization l Kinesthetic (guys especially) Use physical clues, ie…acting things out, writing things out 3, 5 10 times, taking good notes, associating things with actions or activities, etc. to recall needed information.

Successful Student Tested Techniques l Read the words, say the words, then write the words. l Relate the words to something that reminds you of them. l Test yourself using vocabulary cards or a folded paper. l Mentally use them in sentences.

Successful Student Tested Techniques l Say it out loud while looking at the word, image or expression. l Teach the words to someone else and in so doing learn them yourself. l Create a mental image or picture of the thing or action. l Use reverse cramming

Successful Student Tested Techniques l Divide and conquer. First learn all the words, then as you review them, then divide the words into two categories, those that you know well and those that you need more work on, then repeat the process for those words until you know them all, then review them all.
